Oh so this is what The New Medium.com is about.
Over the years, I've come to the conclusion that the main reason why people can endlessly ask whether designers should code or not is that there is no such thing as a “designer”, it's simply too vague a term. You can be a graphic designer, a front-end designer, a product designer, but being a designer is basically meaningless.
Tim Brown would probably disagree with you :)
As far as DN is concerned, the term "designer" doesn't tend to include: graphic designers, industrial designers, fashion designers, or architects.
Next week of Medium: “Should Architects Pour Concrete?”
You would be surprised at the answer you would get to this question in some (wide-ranging) architect's circles.
There should really be t-shirts for them too.
Ditto, Im starting to realize that a majority of the arguments on the internet are because people don't understand how language works.
Anytime we discuss "should designers code?" here, what it really means is "should designers who mostly work on digital product interfaces for tech companies code?"
Yea, as much as I like dabbling in front end code for my own stuff..as a graphic designer who does print, logos, branding AND web projects, should I try to take over the front end development or let my developer do his job?
Should dentists have a good overall grasp of the medical field in general, in order to do a good job on a specific area of the body? Yes.
Digital landfill is real folks.
Only if they start writing Medium articles. We need more Medium articles written by dentists.
No, they should stick to killing lions. Coding is so far out of the lion killing spectrum.
This is getting old... This is the kinda stuff that talks in favor of making a downvote option on DN. How can this be the top story?
We /r/circlejerk now.
Have been for a while to be fair...
IT DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE DAMN TEAM YOU (WANT TO) WORK WITH.
Seriously. You want to build a site ground-up? Be ready to do some stuff yourself. Work for a huge huge team? You'll be working with just a tiny slice of the pie.
Simple as that.
It's a succinct statement delivered through sarcasm.
People here seem to be hating on the sarcasm but I think it's the statement that's hurting people's feelings.
Great article. I feel inspired to not give too many f*s and follow my dreams :)
Should you consider a dentist's ability to code before hiring him?
Many dentists do code although that is usually done in smaller offices. In larger practices, they have a medical coder to whom they hand off the patient's info so the medical coder can code the treatment up. :-P
One could make some analogy with designers and writing HMTL and CSS but it might lose something in the translation.
Please be the end, please be the end, please be the end.
This is such a thought-provoking article that everyone should spend the weekend considering applying to their loves.
