Ask DN: Should I Update to El Capitan?

almost 8 years ago from , Frontend Developer and Designer

I'd like to update my Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro to El Capitan but was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the new version of OS X. My most frequently used apps are: Chrome, Spotify, Sublime Text 3, WebStorm, Sketch 3, PS CS6, AI CS6 and iTerm 2. Is it safe to upgrade?

Additionally, if you've already updated, what's your opinion on the new OS?

I haven’t used PS CS6 on El Capitan, but all other apps I run have worked flawlessly with only one exception: Hammer (there’s a working beta though).

Stuff I've used a lot on El Capitan without issues:

    • Photoshop CC 2015
    • Illustrator CC 2015
    • Slack
    • Skala Preview
    • Tower
    • MacDown
    • iStat Menus (5.11 required)
    • Coda
    • Soulver
    • 1Password
    • Tweetbot
    • Fantastical (I think 2.1 is required?)
    • Acorn

As OS updates go, this is a good and solid one in my opinion.

Whoa someone still uses Coda! Explain yourself.

I love it! What’s not to love? :D I probably should give Sublime Text 3 a spin to see if I like it.

        Why? What's wrong with Coda?

Nothing really. It's nice software I just didn't think anyone used IDEs like that anymore. It's a tool to get the job done. If it works great. I used it years ago before version 2. I remember it being very bloated though.

I use a lot of its features, including FTP. It’s big, but absolutely perfect for the tasks I ask of it. Favourite bits: Great cross-document find/replace, FTP with multiple views, realtime WebKit preview, performance (native FTW!). I realise quite a few of those features are available elsewhere.

Oh, and the icon… that’s one of the best OS X app icons in existence.

Atom or ST3 are the only options in my book. And Atom has proven itself fast, reliable and 100% open source. Solid with integrations up the ying yang.

This is coming from a designer who has used Coda, Espresso, Chocolat, Textmate and every other text editor imaginable.

But, each to his own I guess. If your editor/IDE works for you, then stick with it.

I had two main issues with El Capitán upgrade: AI & PS CC 2014 and 2015 couldn't show the right click menu, but not always... It happens most of the time. Some people are experiencing this issues as I found in the boards.

    Has anyone had this awkwardness?

    PS: soulseek caused kernel panic.

If you use Transmit by Panic to mount drives, you'll want to hold off.

It doesn't affect me much, since I rarely use that feature, but if anyone else here does you can follow the update progress on this blog post from Panic.

Has anyone checked Fireworks CS6? I need to open really old files sometimes!

If you use Sass and Compass beware. I spent a solid hour and half trying to revive my install of compass the day after I upgraded and realized there was a real problem. If anyone experiences this problem, here's what solved my issue.

All pro apps are fine on my side. The only issue I've had is enabling Airplay with Vox.

Works fine for all my essential software:

    • Sublime Text 3
    • GitHub for Mac
    • CodeKit
    • Ruby 2.2.X
    • Rails 4.2.X
    • Postgres
    • Slack
    • Photoshop CC 2015
    • Dropbox

    ...all work fine.

I'm on a Mid-2010 15" Macbook Pro and updated to El Capitan a couple days ago and it actually seems to be running faster and smoother than before. I've had no issues so far.

    My frequently used apps are:

    • Chrome
    • Firefox
    • Sublime Text 3
    • Photoshop CC
    • Illustrator CC
    • Sourcetree
    • VirtualBox
    • Filezilla
    • iTerm2
    • Moom
    • Little Snitch
    • Alfred
    • TunnelBlick

    I'm really digging the update.

I haven't updated yet but I've heard there are some problems with homebrew. In case you have it installed you might want to wait or read up a bit more about the problems.

Had to recover my old system. The update worked fine, but Migration Assistant kept crashing, so I couldn't get any of my files/settings/etc ported over. Only option (AFAIK) was to do a recovery from a Time Machine backup. Cost me a day. Doesn't seem to be a common issue from what I read online, but has definitely made me more careful. Just remember to always have a current Time Machine backup before updating.

As with any major OS update, it is usually a good idea to wait for the first patch release, so 10.11.1.

I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook pro and I haven't noticed any problems. I have used Indesign cc, Illustrator cc, Photoshop cc, and sketch.

I have early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and its working pretty well. It crashed when listening to Spotify, chrome open, deleting something from the trash and installing npm dependencies. Honestly that is not the fault of El Capitan but myself... It is only 4gb of RAM.

I'm using a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13"! Honestly I'm afraid to upgrade to El Capitan. Heck I'm still at Maverick. But reading your reply I'll take the bet and update.

Mavericks was a great release. It’ll probably feel quicker than El Capitan.

Really? Aw shoot, will upgrading be worth it? Haha. But I do want to get my hands on XCode 7 and their new testing feature.

Im on a 2012 MBP i5 and I had to upgrade the ram to 8gb and the HDD to an SSD to make Yosemite bareable. Now its all blazy, I can only imagine how much faster it would be on Mavericks.

I really ought to upgrade the ram to 8gb. I've looked into it and its only $130AUD so that is $2000 cheaper than purchasing a new laptop entirely. Is the process to upgrade ram simple?

I upgraded my 2011 MacBook Pro 13" from 4gb ram to 8gb ram. It's very simple but I suggest to have someone from the apple store do it for you because the process is very meticulous.

Basically it's just a 2 ram chips (is that what it's called? anyway) on your laptop that can be ejected.

Also maybe consider and look into upgrading to 16gb ram too. I believe MacBook pro support 16gb ram even though it doesn't say so in the spec sheet. Since you're going to pay 100+ dollars for them, might as well go for the best.

Upgrading the ram is nor complex or meticulous and It's one of the most basic things you can do to nearly all computers.

I bought a 'used' 8GB module from eBay for 25 bucks and it's been working wonders.(Anon bought an MBP with 8 and then he installed 16 at home with ram of his preference). Ram rarely goes bad and sometimes people just pull it out of NEW working machines to make an aftermarket upgrade for cheaper than buying it bundled.

I am not sure about how CS6 will work - CC2015 works much better than it did on Yosemite. All other apps run perfectly and the OS feels smooth and stable.

There are a lot of minor improvements that all come together to create a more polished experience - my advice is to upgrade.
