The Principal role is typically for an individual contributor who also has some leadership/mentorship responsibilities, but isn't on the strategy or management team.

A job you shouldn't apply for because they spelled "Principal" wrong.

Principal anything are generally only at larger companies/agencies, and represent the highest-level individual contributors to a firm. They are the most senior (6-10+ yrs experience) and either lead to architect roles or management.

I've seen it spelled like that in the UK. Principle != Principal but maybe not across the pond.

A Principle Designer does as the title is called:

prin·ci·ple noun 1. a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.

They create reasoning behind design systems. Most companies don't have them nor should they have them but a good example is google; They hired Principle designers when they were working on material design. They were the highest level position on those teams and were responsible for the logic of the system by creating rules and standards that can be applies to every element. Apple and Microsoft have similar positions for their design languages.

It's a designer who instead of actually working all day get to play PS4 or hang out with his dogs. He also goes to meetings.

Typically a director-level position but without the management tasks that go with it.

A potent mix of a leader, senior and soldier in the design field.

Keep in mind that many places have many titles for the same role or something similar with minor tweaks to their responsibilities.
