Pretty good, but does it need the long shadow? I know some of the other google logos have it, but not all of them.
What if the shadow was like this?: (Very quick photoshop, so be no means perfect...)
If the shadow was slightly further to the left than what I've done there, it might make the logo look better but can't try it at the moment...
Cool try James. But, Google uses shadows as long shadow (Hangouts and Google+) or go with material design guideline of considering it as paper (Calendar and Gmail icon). So, I went with the long shadow thing.
I agree - the current Playstore icon doesn't fit in and I like the direction you're heading in. I'm not a fan of the big blue, though - it has pretty low contrast with the neighboring green and they aren't the most exciting shades of blue and green, either.
I too don't like the blue and would experiment with other shades, but the colors used are from the palette used by Google in their new identity. https://design.google.com/articles/evolving-the-google-identity/
