Belgian Railway redesigned and animated

8 years ago from , Front-end Developer

Hey everyone, the landing page for the NMBS in motion project is now live!

I redesigned the NMBS's Android app and I'm trying to get them to notice it. Check out the link above and tweet about it here.

Wouldn't it be much easier if Belgian Railway just start working with Google transit?

Not bad, but the site (page?) lacks a strong sign-off, or useful footer!

Thanks Dirk. I agree, it's the only thing I wasn't 100% sure off, but I didn't want to wait any longer to send it out. I'll have another look on how to improve!

Great initiative! Don't know how bad the app is on Android but the iOS app is also in dire need of an update. In the end it would be even nicer to have one app for all public transport in Belgium.

As an avid transit rider, I find it insane that it will take you 8 taps to set your departure date + time. Most people are on the go, so minimizing the number of taps is in the user's best interest. This can easily be resolved by using a date and time picker (all in the same view).

Your search results also don't give the user any options to filter (departure time, shortest/longest walking distance, transfers, etc.)

I'd also highly recommend using "user generated" data for your user profiles. We see too many mockups that have "cherry picked" user profiles (most of them being models).

      Hey Miguel,

This redesign isn't top-notch UX. It was mainly made to set a new look & feel for the app and to show how elements would behave. I'm personally not a fan of the scrollable date & time picker you attached, hence why I didn't go for them.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

What's the point of having a "pretty" design if it doesn't work? It's like having a Mercedes with no engine. Sure it looks great, but if it doesn't work then why would someone want to spend their time in evaluating this?

What are your reasons for doing this? Your design doubles the number of taps needed. Taps are expensive on mobile.

I was trying to make a step in the right direction with this. I'm not saying they should make a pixel-perfect copy of what I made. What I did is far from and end-product but I believe a small step in the right direction is still a valuable step.

If I'm not mistaken opening the modal you linked, swiping multiple times for the date (because you might not get it right in one swipe), and the same for the date and time are still a significant amount of taps/swipes.

Also, this is my graduation project from a couple of months ago, time was limited and decisions were made.

Fun design concept! Meanwhile, there’s also these great projects:

Nice! I didn't realise the data was open now. Guess this solves pretty much all the problems, just get everyone to use Citymapper instead of the NMBS app. I still wish they (NMBS) would update it though. BeTrains isn't much of a 'solution' imo. I've never developed an Android app but I may give it a shot with the data you provided, see how far I can get.

      Thanks Xavier

It was just alright. I'd rather see the youtube video on top of the website.

Well done! Which tool have you used for the interaction animations?
