Today's the day we lost the Avenir's father. May he rest in peace.
His typefaces have been my favourite go-to fonts for most of my design career. We lost a great one.
RIP, really loved Avenir!
I hate to diverge from subject when it comes to a loss of a great designer, but Hacker News occasionally puts a black line on top of their navbar as a way to respect the death of some people. Perhaps DN could do something similar in the future.
Really sweet idea
A true loss to the design world. A true legend.
May he joyfully kern for all of eternity. RIP.
“In general I am pleased if new typefaces resemble Frutiger. If other designers copy my typeface it must be good.”
…from Eye Magazine’s 1999 feature on Adrian Frutiger.
It’s crazy to think the influence he’s had on modern type design and graphic design in general. Univers was a groundbreaking design, more human than its counterpart Helvetica, more modern than Akzidenz. Frutiger marks signage everywhere; at almost every airport. It’s the muse of typefaces like Myriad and TheSans, and the foundation of bastardizations — I mean, homages — like Segoe. And Avenir was an instant classic adopted by the digital world.
We've lost a legend today. Rest in peace.
May he rest in peace.
As a side note: This has to speak to DN's reach in the design community. There's no mention on Google or Twitter about this news, but it's the leading story on DN. This place is special.
His profile on Wikipedia has been updated :(
:( indeed but thank you so much for exposing me to WikiWand
