I feel the new Google logo placement in their Android search bar is off. I really think they should nudge it down down a little bit. Don't you guys feel the same?
I wonder what the Guardian's Reader would do.

Nope, should be (and is) centred using the x-height.
Yes, but that's too much in the second one. The space is no longer even between ascending and descending of the g and the l. But I do agree that it appears a little more even than the first one. :/

Having said that – ship first, strive for perfection later.
I prefer how it is currently. when moved down it becomes bottom heavy and a bit unbalanced.
Who really cares? It's about 2 pixels.
You're not showing us where the baseline is once it's replaced by text that you type.
And if we're talking pure image alignment: 
doing the lords work
they aligned the logo by small caps line, which visually is heavier, and you centered the logo by the first cap 'G'.
Personally I prefer how it is now, but I didn't saw in the interface of my nexus yet.
