Web Hosting for Designers?

4 years ago from , Mobile Product Designer at Credit Karma

I'm looking for a new web host for a couple personal projects, blogs, and sites I have.

I've mostly used resellers to give each one of my domains their own CPanel, but recently moved into a manages VPS. The problem is, I don't know anything about Linux/command line to use the VPS. I'd love to downgrade and wanted to know if there are any hosts out there that are geared towards Designers.

Looking for something low maintenance and uses CPanel/WHM to set up accounts. Anyone have suggestions?

A Small Orange is good if you have low storage & bandwidth needs like I do. They also have a very logical UI and cPanel baked in.

I've also used DreamHost in the past. Their interface wasn't very pretty but it wasn't really hard to find things either. Plus they have a wiki that has articles on how to do just about everything they offer.

Media Temple is basically no-coding-needed, just click-and-play for everything.

Do I need to know any command line or code in order to use DigitalOcean?

I'm using digitalOcean, it gives you an option to choose operating system and web server. I choose Ubuntu + LAMP. Let me answer your question. Basically you need to know how to start/stop server and simple file operations. Here is what you need for multiple websites in one vps.

        • Copy your files to a directory (e.g. /var/www/siteA)
        • Create a virtual host (duplicate /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf with correct directory and website name)
        • Restart server
        • ...
        • Profit

Repeat these steps for every website you have. I think you can handle. It's not a rocket science :)

I switched to DigitalOcean + ServerPilot + CloudFlare few months back and could not be happier and I knew very little about terminal, ssh and all that stuff.

The answer to your question is yes and no.

You can just install a prebuilt setup on DO and be done with it.

But surely once you have your own machine, you'd like to have some auto-updates and security. You'll need to use the command line but DO, SP and CF make it super easy even for a noob like I was few month ago.

Go and google a $10 DO voucher, that'll give you the smallest machine for free to experiment for 2 months...

I'm a big fan of Flywheel for Wordpress based sites. I've also found that MediaTemple's GS is pretty decently fast for basic PHP sites... now that they use SSDs. Also, if you have a bunch of static sites, I would go with Forge.

Those are some pretty expensive options imo

I mean, it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. There's almost always a premium for a well-designed, managed hosting solution... To spend an extra $3-10/mo to not have to manage upgrades, updates, security, etc... it's totally worth it.

I've been using Bluehost for my hosting needs, but I've heard good things about A Small Orange as well.

i use bluehost for smaller projects too, as they are cheeeeeaaaapp. but some things won't work like other hosts...

recently, i found trying to set up Grav almost impossible due to the way their shared hosting works. I think their VPS plans and up are probably better suited.

MediaTemple for sure. I run 2 VPS there. I've used Site5, Dreamhost (I still host sites that I don't care about uptime there, since it's terrible and cheap).

I host all my sites, various projects, and later manage and host most of my clients on MT.

They use cPanel and they have excellent customer service. I'm not sure how they compare on pricing with the others but it's worth it for the level of service they offer.

    I use 123-Reg, but that's probably because I'm U.K.-based unlike most others here. :)

If you know how to use .git ( only a basic level is really only required ) I'd recommend giving OpenShift https://www.openshift.com/ ago. There's a free account . Gives you ability to have 3 websites for free. To deploy a website you only need to push ( 'git push' command ). There's enough options to choose from when choosing a platform you want to use eg. PHP, NodeJS, etc etc.

There's a few drawback to a PaaS as a host, me personally think it's the way to go. I've upgraded to the bronze account to squash the idle issue.

I've been using media temple for over 5 years now and it does the job for most of my client sites and it's very easy to use - http://www.adhamdannaway.com/blog/web-hosting/whats-the-best-web-hosting-for-designers

I use Digital Ocean VPS for larger projects. They've got a great community and good tutorials and documentation too. Hope that helps :-)

I've heard that MT was acquired by GoDaddy, do you think it's changed somewhat over the past couple years? Have you had to change servers or anything?

I would highly recommend Cloudways. Its a managed hosting platform that helps designers and agencies to setup hosting for their own websites and their client websites with ease.

Usually designers don't have sys-admin skills to manage the whole website. Like installing services such as Apache, Ngnix, Varnish, Redis etc. Cloudways platform helps deploy all these services automatically with an option to customize your orchestration according to the needs.

By using Cloudways, designers can easily deploy a server on DigitalOcean, Vultr, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud and Kyup in not more than 5 minutes.
