Any research on horizontal app design?

almost 4 years ago from , Freelance Designer

Hi all,

I'm currently working on a project and I'm trying to find some good papers or blog posts about horizontal apps. I wonder if the turning of the phone has any impact on the user (it's meant for non-game apps).

Would love to know!

Luke Wroblewski put out some data saying 94% of people regularly hold there phone in portrait orientation. This statistic included larger phablet sized phones where one would think landscape might be more common. From a quick audit I did recently, very few third party iOS apps have landscape view. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon, Target, Slack, Uber, Fitbit & Spotify do not. Seems like more text/reading based apps like Designer News, Evernote, Kindle, & Dropbox do.

You mentioned 'turning the phone', so by horizontal you mean landscape orientation? When I saw the question my first thought was horizontal navigation within an app, and for that I would suggest to take a look at apps for Windows Phone, that OS really tried to make it work, but people didn't follow.

Again, if you mean landscape orientation then that's a different thing.
