Product Sans looks great, but might be the least creative font name of all time.

On behalf of the team, thanks!

The name ... well initially we called it Google Sans, because it was supposed to be paired with the new "Google"wordmark. That got pretty confusing quickly though, because the new Google was not set in "Google Sans". Product Sans makes the typeface's function and relation to the new logo boringly and pedantically clear. :-)

Here is what amazes me. Changing and maturing a brand identity includes a lot of stakeholders and when you have many stakeholders, it becomes difficult to have a clear owner. It seems from the blogpost, design was given ownership. In a week, they were able to define success metrics and ship solutions and a direction. They had clear decision makers and owners. That is amazing. Google’s brand is something that can easily be defended against change.
