Imagining Eli Schiff's reaction to 'another flat logo' and doing all the lols.
Who is Eli Schiff?
Consider yourself lucky.
^ This guy's salty.
Oh, it's the Google Photos as final solution "Endlösung" guy.
There's a service you might have heard of to help you with your query.
That article is pretty disgusting...
No one never claimed that he was mature.
Xavier? Doesn't seem like it, but at the very least I would expect Designer News readers not to compare Google services to the Holocaust.
I did apologise for that (http://xavierbertels.com/blog/google-photos-the-final-blow-for-privacy), but don’t let that get in the way of painting a one-sided picture.
I guess this answers my question :).
A couple notes with regard to your comment:
Whether the logo is flat has little to do with its merit or lack thereof. Depth on logos should be understood as a particular stylistic treatment—a useful technique to have in your toolbox for application in the appropriate contexts. However, a logo proper should always be legible and evocative whether it is set flat in black and white or otherwise.
The logo becoming flat is hardly a new development:
That said, Google's logo is just the tip of the iceberg. Can't go too much deeper right at the moment.
That said, Google's logo is just the tip of the iceberg. Can't go too much deeper right at the moment.
You can't go much deeper? So there's no depth… Because it's all flat! It all makes sense now!
I upvoted you because I couldn’t downvote you. I hope it makes sense!
I love this animation:
Welp, that's pretty good. Is the G color distribution the same pattern as the Chrome logo?
No.
Source - All I did was look at the new google logo and then look at the chrome logo.
... your face is a source!
/runs away
Here's a link to the vector source and actual RGB colors for comparison - https://ogol.io/google.com/oh2wmez
About that color distribution, it's kinda weird. The text logo had 2x blue and 2x red, a little yellow and even less green. So my brain has always associated google with blue/yellow/red, never green. But the colored G has loads more green in it making it less "googley".
Maybe that's why I instantly went to the Chrome logo in the cutout G. Interesting take.
I love it too. Feeling that the in-between dot transitions should be shorter and be of the same duration. Otherwise, it's money.
If you don't like the new logo at least you like the animation.... good fallback
Rejected Google logo
#tooSoon?
That actually looks great :D.
Here is a design process article from the team that worked on this.
that post is drool. so much Form niceness and process pics/anims
I can't believe they had time to animate all this stuff.
The design process article was made by Cook, and 2 Jonathans! This logo is already Apple proof!!
Woww, I'm obsessed with the animations of the Google Dots. So clever.
Wow, wtf. It's surprising read this process of branding. Was very well documented. Awesome.
I guess that's because it's a video and the compression may damaged some parts. Maybe I'm mistaken.
It’s on Google Official blog. But the same problem pops on Google Search, Google Translate and Google Design blog.
Must be something with.
… engineering developed a unique approach for asset generation, version control, and self-service distribution across our code base. Using pixel-perfect SVGs for base assets, we automatically generated thousands of vector-based variants to satisfy size, color, and background requirements. These variants are then checked into our source control in a canonical location to avoid duplication and ensure that every team is using the most correct, up-to-date assets.
Indeed, I was wrong. I saw it in the official Spain homepage. Looks horrible!
realizing/maybe was pointed out already, but typeface was in the Alphabet stuff last month.....
Facebook made a new logo, no one said sh**t. Google makes a new logo, my mom calls me about it #bruh
I'd like to meet your mom.
Settle down cowboy.
Facebook let one of its interns announce the new logo on a rolled-up t-shirt mockup on Twitter.
Google made an emotional video and had its design team blog a comprehensive article about it.
See the difference?
I can't believe I was at the gym when this happened. I'll never forgive myself.
It's not your fault
I'm experiencing the same feeling as when I first saw the flamboyant childish aesthetic of iOS 7 / OS X Yosemite icons... Initial dislike, eventual assimilation.
I don't like it. Sorry.
They've gotten so good at this
G is familiar
Source: Google Authenticator
What the hell is that?
Google Authenticator.
This is a really nice animation as well:
Edit: gif only loops once.
There's also a fun interactive/animated logo evolution if you search "google logo history".
No snark attached, I'm a huge fan of the change.
Just don't care.
Material, Material. Yeah....
There are some cool things happening, but honestly, I’ve never seen Google as a design leader.
Visual style always looks like it’s straight outta kindergarten class. Always has:
Seconded
Worth looking into the symbolism of the letter G: http://www.whale.to/b/snake_tail.html
Supposed to represent the serpent / Snake swallowing tail (Oroboros)
Also apparently has ties to free-masonry: http://www.masonic-lodge-of-education.com/letter-g.html
Even though Google's corporate mantra is ‘Don't be evil’. Sounds like Doublespeak to me
Correlation meets causation at its best
Do all logos have to look the same?
I'm not liking it. Wipe away all personality and individuality from all design in the world. All cars look the same, so should all logos!
It seems like restructuring the company allowed them to refocus "Google" as a product since "Alphabet" is now carrying the corporate weight. Hence more focus on UI implementation.
Feels like a step in the right direction. Excited to see the full system.
Execution is dynamite, tons tons tons to study and learn from here. (My favorite little detail: the full logo doesn't load for low bandwidth connections. Awesome.)
That said, I personally dislike the full-blast-flat-color, geometric aesthetic as applied for Google's needs & purposes. It's all fun but little else (which seems more appropriate for Alphabet, considering the recent restructuring).
I've turned of Twitter until this dies down.
Brace yourself, there is an apple event next week.
You should write a Medium post.
Don't go on Google+, there's only G engineers there talking about their new T-shirts
"Don't go on Google+" should be sufficient, no further explanation needed.
it's nice/it's still 'them'. Kneejerk reaction was that it was that flat plain sans-on-white thing that so so many brands have done in the past year or so. Uggh. But to G's credit, they were already in the minimal logo-on-white space forever now, so.....
Really enjoying it. Great balance, prominence and feels so playful.. and I love the write up too. Just think what Material has done for design, it sets boundaries, explains itself without feeling too restricting and 'Apple-like'.
+1.
This feels right. Love the 'G' mark. Animations are on point as always.
Now it looks more modern. I liked it.
Yusssssss. They're lil' lowercase serif "g" has always looked so out of place alongside the other social network logos. This is much, much better.
good
I do miss the lowercase double storey g though.
I like it. That's it. I do.
Is that so wrong?
Can't put my finger on it, but it feels slightly too perfect to me. Might be the roundness of the 'G' and 'o'. Has a Futura feel to it.
The only thing I dislike from this design is the way they sell it. So much grids that doesn't tell anything special.
Oh, I love this https://www.pinterest.com/jrigerl/putting-bullshit-guides-over-stuff/
Looks like the Google search page has been touched as well to reflect the new identity.
It has some freshness at the same time I think it has bent too much to be a generic look - maybe there are reasons behind why it is looking so. In the blog, you can see many variations on the wall, all of which was scrapped by the final concept.
Everything feels nice, except the circles animating to become a cross edged font irks me. So I tried to see how it would look if the circles were not constrained to be cut off at the final frame. Just posted a shot of Dribbble with that : Google New Logo - Exploration on Dribbble
I cannot call it good or bad as there might be a lot of brainstorming and hours of hard work behind it. So ending the note with that would be ungracious. I hope this solves some problems that the old logo had. Ultimately, that is the reason of designs/redesigns - to solve problems.
Must have used the same agency that did the Facebook and Lenovo logo redesigns. Next up: Coca Cola.
Not sure about the mix of Logo type (sans-serif) with another sans-serif (Product Sans) in product locks ups. I am conservative I guess.
Does anyone know if google making Ginger (New Font) open source?
I don't believe Ginger is Google's font. Wouldn't surprise me if Product Sans was open-sourced in ~6 mos.
Do you mean it's the actual font? Or if google owns it? Ginger is the actual font according to CSS. I'm not sure if google owns it.
Right I'm saying Google doesn't own it, and therefore can't open source it.
I don't know what bugs me so much about that G, but holy crow the capital G in Google's logotype has proportions that deeply unsettles me. The logo, much less so. Maybe its how perfect of a circle it is? Dunno.
the article comments on it: " Designed on the same grid as our product iconography, the circular shape was optically refined to prevent a visual “overbite” at the point where the circular form meets the crossbar."
it's interesting.
Is the typeface made in-house or by Lineto (they made Circular)?
Homemade. You can find details here https://design.google.com/articles/evolving-the-google-identity
Yeah I know, but I was wondering if Lineto was involved somehow..
