On point in that they're national flag level awful
embarrassed to admit that i thought the silver fern flag was their national flag.
Me too. Or i just hoped it was!
There's also a Ted Talk about flags: http://www.ted.com/talks/roman_mars_why_city_flags_may_be_the_worst_designed_thing_you_ve_never_noticed
Yeah one of my life goals was to be the first TED talk about flag design. Roman beat me to the punch. :-(
FWIW, redesigning our flag has been a cyclic topic that seems to come up as a debate every 1-2 years (along with campaign for NZ to switch to being a republic), with competitions held, and of course no change ever made. So pretty amazing news to hear it's actually going to referendum.
There are so many flags based off the union jack + stars, I'd love to see us adopt a new identity. 14 years ago when I was backpacking around Europe I stitched Hundertwasser's flag on my backpack, and it still has a special place in my heart: http://yeswhangarei.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/manifesto.pdf
'Te Pepe' is kind of amazing too...
Yeah I love the Hundwertwasser too - hoping it makes the top 4!
Legit. Somebody even made a tool to see how a flag design will look like when it's flown http://flagtest.nz/?id=20767
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
As a fellow kiwi, I'm finding the whole 'changing the flag' campaign a little unnecessary – both in terms of money and time. Our government of spending $17 mil on this which could be spent on much worthier causing, our flag should be far from our top priority.
I'm all for a new well designed flag, but find the efforts to get everyone involved with What do we stand for?, while admirable, a little contrived.
The clear alternative is the silver fern (on a black background) that we've been using for over 150 years and which most New Zealanders identify with.
The silver fern on a black field is their de facto identity. If they decide on a new design and it isn’t a silver fern on black, I’ll eat my maple-drenched flag.
