Genius might be the only company on earth that could pull off that shade of yellow. Bloomberg's aesthetic is going mainstream.
I wouldn't say this is Bloomberg's aesthetic– Seems closer to Artsy (artsy.net) and they've had a consistent aesthetic for a much longer period of time.
Bloomberg's aesthetic is going mainstream.
I wouldn't exactly call Genius 'mainstream'. Genius is a site that is targeted at a younger, more creative audience that the mainstream. In fact, Bloomberg would like have a much more conservative audience.
idk, it actually hurts my head pretty badly.
Yikes. That's horrendous.
A few things without even clicking around:
- Terrible typography that's barely readable as english
- The headline breaks on an odd word
- The logo bleeds into the background (maybe some are fans of this but it's not legible)
- What's the point of the purple text 95% cut off on the masthead? Artistic? Hipster?
- No hover transitions on anything. Truly remarkable how bad this UX is...
- The metadata on the bottom of the cards is laid out poorly. The profile icon breaks the grid
- The yellow is repulsive
- Oh now I see what the purple text is. You have to click learn more. Why not have some indication that you can reveal this information when hovering over it? Why not transition or subtle animate on show?
...I have to get back to work but I'll just leave everyone with this image
For a lyrics site, their font choice is really poor. Unless their intention is to mask the accuracy of their lyrics!
Which font are you talking about? The font they use for lyrics looks like Whitney to me
Typography seems a bit all over the place to me. Not so much for their unusual choice for the main type, but for the really odd font combinations. I've never been a regular visitor, so I'm geniunely wondering whether everything about this is new, or they're still rolling out the changes...
Pretty old - but so so good.

Take a deep breath before you comment and realise that you are probably not the target audience for this.
Well, I don't know about you but I'm rarely the target audience for sites I design ;)
That yellow is making me nauseated.
A lot of it just reminds me of MTV in the 80s.
They had such a great black and gold design before, with a much cleaner logo and iconography. Wonder why they went so far in the opposite direction.
Ewww. Though I can imagine them finding this anti-aesthetic statement amusing.
I personally can't stand being on there for more than 30 seconds. The black and yellow colorschme is jarring and as Bryant mentions, the font choice makes everything pretty much illegible, which kind of defeats the object of a lyrics site!
I like it.
Welp. I think they're definitely pandering to the MTV crowd. Fits right in.
Interesting choice of headline typeface—those flat n's, m's, and u's. Can't decide if I'm into it or not.
dunno about this. yellow is odd, but not really that far off old idea. Is there any performance increase on the site? All that JS and hovers and what not I always found clunky. Looks to me like UI on the individual content pages is the same
This new redesign is especially jarring because it feels like they took two steps back. I was largely behind their dark theme layout but they muddled it with this yellow pastel nav thing. And if you go to a destination page, say http://rap.genius.com/, you get the yellow pastel nav above their old black theme complete with purple pastel links. What the fuck.
Is having a very large patch of yellow on black a good idea. On my iMac the patch is very glaring to the eye.
