OSX El Capitan Public Beta runs well

over 5 years ago from , http://meet-cristian.com

For anyone thinking of imstalling the beta, it runs pretty well, I haven't noticed any problems at all so far. I'll update here if I do.

All mail plugins are broken, as expected, until the devs release updates.

If you use Photoshop CC 2015, stay the heck away from El Capitan for now. Most of the measurement tools are broken and there's general breakage all over.

    Illustrator is also entirely broken.

To those who have updated: the CC 2014 versions of both programs work perfectly. Go figure.

Any problem with brew ? It was a nightmare at Yosemite migration...

Didn't seem to have a problem. I did a quick brew cleanup beforehand, and the install seemed to take a normal amount of time (~50m)

    How about iOS 9?

That runs well too. It's full of misaligned stuff and visual bugs but the under the hood improvements are definitely felt (not so much in el cap).

I wouldn't install it however unless you have an iPad - that's where all the new features are. On phones, it feels pretty much the same and there nothing that can't wait until September.

iOS 9b3 is great, most apps work great. A few animation bugs / lag. SF font is great. Keyboard caps fix is so nice.

I saw a few install fails on the watch os fwiw so be careful there if you're on a beta binge :)

Installed it on my iPad Air 1, rolled back to 8.4 pretty quickly. Definitely less performant when animating views and launching apps. The upside is that now it's quicker than when I started because I had to restore it.

I was thinking about installing it on my Air 1, but your comment has me hesitating.

I was bummed when they said the full multitasking would only be supported on the iPad Air 2.

I'm having some serious battery drain. After 3 hours this morning, the battery went from 100% to 68% on my iPhone 6 - all I did was to check the weather and my email in the morning. Most of the consumption coming from the Music app (that haven't even used) and Home Screen.

      Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Am I the only one with issues? I'm running (a clean install of) DP3, not the public beta, but I suspect they are rather similar.

I don't see any performance improvements over Yosemite, which sucks, and Mail.app crashes constantly. I'm fully aware what the term 'beta' entails, but considering all the praise…

    Gawd, I miss Mavericks.

I'm sorry yours sucks, however if past experience is an indicator things do get a lot better with the GM. I remember first installing the public beta of Yosemite on an older iMac and it ran like shit - but the GM was great.

Oh, I meant that it sucks that it hasn't improved (for me) since Yosemite.

I've been through the developer previews for many generations of OS X now and have had pretty similar experiences every time in the last few years. Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion are the only releases I can remember that were pretty solid from reasonably early betas.

The UI feels dramatically smoother on my 1st gen 15" rMBP. I can scroll through the app finder using the icon view and it exhibited none of Yosemite's sluggishness. . The same goes for things like Mission Control, resizing window etc and best of all, it doesn't seem to matter whether the rMBP was running on the Intel HD4000 or the Nvidia GT650M.

My JavaScript projects have been running fine. With a MEAN stack setup, had no issues.

I haven't tested PS or Sketch but all of my other productivity apps are running just fine.

I won't upgrade. If I do it my rails apps will start to cry.

Are there any Issues with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Indesign?

I could be wrong but PS actually feels pretty good. I managed to move a pretty big group around and it didn't draw the animation at 2 frames per second.

If you have to ask, don't install it.

I asked because I read somewhere, that there are problems with labels because of San Francisco.

My point is that if you're concerned about bugs in professional software within a beta OS then you shouldn't be installing a beta OS.

How does Sketch run in el Capitan? Anyone run in to any issues there? Only thing holding me back.

So San Francisco > Helvetica Neue?

    0 points
    • Labib Rahman, over 5 years ago

Definitely. And by a pretty wide margin too. I so strongly disliked Helvetica Neue as a system font, that I overwrote some system files to use Fira Sans instead.

San Francisco however is working nicely as a system font.

Yeah b3 is much better than b1-2. Chrome scroll jerk was almost enough to get me reformatting.

Stoked for GM and more speed efficiencies. This is going to be a great os update.
