Ask DN: Thoughts on custom right click context menu

almost 5 years ago from , UX designer, Azavea

I'm really curious what peoples thoughts are on this, specifically within a web app and not a typical marketing website.

Dropbox handles this rather well but I can't think of any other good examples.

Do you think this is bad practice? Have there been any studies on this that back up a claim one or the other?

I'd say its fair game. I wouldn't consider a web app to be any different from a native app, and most (all?) have customized right click menus.

However, I'm not so sure users would be aware that they would have extra controls attached to a right click function in a web browser. It may only work well if the users are heavily engaged with the app and have come to learn that a right click has a set of customized functions. Would certainly be a good test to see how many users end up discovering your custom right click menu.
