I think about this concept pretty often. I love the interaction, the visualization and the story that goes along with it.
Year one is a struggle to get through, and I understand why, but from a designer-worrying-about-users perspective, it may turn off casual visitors because there isnt enough "action" happening for the amount of work it is to scroll.
But, on the flip-side, I think that's the point, and it wouldn't make sense to change it. It seems you found a nice design struggle between concept and implementation which adds further intrigue to my experience.
