VW Futura was already modern, timeless and ownable. There was so much history in there. This is forgettable.
Gross. I bet they sold it with some bullshit about readability on screens.
Yeah I don't get it. I understand designing a new font to tackle problems I.E. in-car UI or watch-faces (San Francisco is a good example). The move to then make that font your universal brand font across every medium is weird.
For the record, I expect Apple's doing just that. The new MacBook's keyboard is set in San Francisco. It's not such a crazy idea.
I don't see Apple ever moving away from Myriad Pro for their branding though.
My first thought was "Gross" as well
Feels more like one of the fonts metadesign helped create for Audi. Really techie and UI focused, which I personally think is the wrong move for Volkswagen. They seem to be making the brand an extension of the Audi brand, which makes it seem less approachable.
I'm a sucker for Futura.
Not a fan of the new typeface.
Let's see how I feel in 6 months.
Looks like Facebook.
Don't hate it though.
The cross stroke on the 'f' and 't' is annoying. Maybe its because I don't have a retina screen.
I'm much more of a fan of the old one, but that may be because I also like the more blocky style of their old cars.
Though seeing as this will be in their infotainment system - along with their other collateral - may give this new font the edge though.
I think everyone needs to lighten up. As a long time fan and owner of VWs, I think this is a good evolution of the typeface.
They took a cold, exacting, precise typeface, and replaced with with something more humanist, something that has interesting bits of contrast, AND it references design shapes found in their vehicles.
Volkswagen, literally means "the people's car", and this font represents a more approachable and relatable feeling than Futura. Let's be fair, throwing out Futura will only offend design geeks, and you aren't a majority of their target market.
VW is one of the most well branded automotive makers. They make one adjustment and you guys lose your trust in their decisions? Gimme a break.
 over here...
Touch the logo on the other hand, and we got a problem.
People in charge of new typeface must be fired. They killed all charisma.
Feels a lot less specific to the brand—a lot less personality. Along the lines of Open Sans and friends. And I don't really feel it adds any bit of "modern," either, which I'm sure was one of the stated objectives.
"Golf" written with Future works so well with the perfect circular 'o'. The new font makes it looks ugly. Ikea moved from Futura to Verdana, and now VW is moving away from this beautiful font as well.
I remember working with an early alpha version of a new Volkswagen Typeface for the global launch campaign for the Golf 7 back in 2012 - when they also refined the logo. It was much closer to the old Futura based style with only subtle changes to make it less blocky and geometric. Sad to see it turned out like this.
They should've named it Wolfsburg.
Feels like a nice refresh without losing the original character.
Is that sarcasm? I see literally none of the original character....
