The removing outline one isn't a hack, that's just breaking basic accessibility.

I was wondering that myself. I think that the title is misleading and not accurate based on what the actual content is. I think if it was "CSS Snippets for Beginners," it would make much more sense.
With that said, this article is obviously targetted towards beginners, and I hope they find it helpful.
