Ask DN: Haptic Prototyping

over 4 years ago from , Product & brand

Hey folks!

I've recently been geeking out a bit over haptic feedback and was wondering how you prototype such a thing. Are there tools to do it or is it something you have to develop and test?

Whilst studying at CIID we experimented with hacked hard drives. Bill Verplank actually taught us and worked with CIID Research to develop it. The mechanical arm in the hard drive is so sensitive that it makes for the perfect haptic interface.

Here is a link to the research page: http://ciid.dk/research/explorations/motors-music/

Did a tactile/haptic radio prototype with Senseg last year, and we worked closely with on of their developers and had access to one of their touch devices with a tactile screen.

Being able to test the design/concept was crucial to us since we quickly found out that it is really hard to imagine how something feels on your finger tips.

Senseg has now released and SDK and developer kit that you might be able to buy.
