ASK DN: Do you uses icon fonts?

over 4 years ago from , UI Designer at Rocker Creative

Hey,

There's a lot of solutions to place an icon in user interface. For example in simple button you can do it by placing it with tag or from CSS background-image. But I found out recently that quite common solution is to create font with your own icons (or some preset) like http://fontello.com/

I can see a lot of advantages of such a solution, for example you can set icon color in CSS without too much effort and coding. Also they are retina-ready (because they are based on SVG as far as I know).

I'm wondering about disadvantages of such solution. Also if you have any experience with using icon fonts I'd be happy to read it. Maybe some good/bad practices & dos/donts?

Thanks!

Icon fonts are great for "mainstream" projects: simple, out of the box solutions which makes development and styling easier. However if you need to design more creative, unique style product , icon fonts might be not the best choice.

Why not? Icon fonts are a great way to deliver monochrome images. Nothing in that prevents you from using them in uniquely styled products, it's all about which icons you use and how.
