Ask DN: Will all the creatives who are parents please stand up?

4 years ago from , Designer / Founder at Gumwall.com

I'm a UX designer, a wantrepreneur, and a parent. I'm looking for others a similar situation to share stories and productivity with, and just for good ol' moral support.

I've had a clingy toddler this week, and I work from home. Productivity this week has been dreadful. There's been lots of cuddles, and I just have to remind myself that he isn't going to be little for long.

It does result in some very late nights to get work done. On the nights he will actually go to bed without me lying next to him until he falls asleep....

Yea, I work from home every once in awhile, and sometimes it's nice, and other times it's not.

I think working at night is just part of the gig. I'm usually more productive anyway.

creative director at a software company in Toronto Canada. Married, 43 years old. 2 kids. 12 and 9.....

It's hard to balance life, kids (and their endless after-school activities) being a good husband, work etc etc... but i suppose you make your adjustments, make your compromises, and just do the best you can.

Lately, I've dealt with both kids being sick, myself being sick, and trying to help create a gigantic sales pitch/rfp.... I'd like to say that doesn't happen very often, but in some ways it does....there's generally always a bunch of things going on at the same time, and you have to learn how to juggle them....

all that aside though, at the end of the day, I'm genuinely thankful for everything....I have a wonderful family and a great career and love both.

as my dad once said, if you do something for your career that you truly love doing, you'll feel as though you never worked a day in your life...and he was absolutely right.

My kids are on the verge of the after school activities, and I can't imagine. I really need to finish up the bulk of this side project before life gets even more busy.

lol...i think you'll find that things generally tend to sort themselves out :) my kids have tae kwon do practice a few nights a week, gymnastics on the weekend as well as piano... and that doesn't include my daughters school-play practice a few times a week etc...

damn...just writing all down here freaks me out... :)

anyhow, it all sorts itself out...you find the time etc... usually for me, it means spending a bit of extra time at some design work later on in the evening, once everyone's gone to bed...like, say, between midnight and 2am or so....

Yea, I'm worried because I'm already up until 2 am and they don't even do any of those extra curricular things yet.
