If this isn't an infinite canvas it's not worth much imo. Just a more structured sketchbook, which is never really what you want from your sketchbook.
This. Literally one of only two complaints with this app, the extremely limited space / awkward aspect ratio.
Complaint #2 is the zoom feature, while intuitive, doesn't scale tools the same way across the board so it can be confusing.
Don't get me wrong I like Paper, but I found nothing so far that beats sketching app flows and UIs on (A3) paper. And agree with Joel, this would need an infinite canvas.
So, why would I use this compared to pen and paper?
Just a few reasons (that work for me):
- You can't "undo" with pen & paper. Perhaps with a pencil, but it can get messy. And then, you can't "redo".
- You can't move stuff around on paper.
- It's faster for sharing; if you work remotely, you need to either take a picture or use a scanner when you use pen & paper.
Thanks Ivan. Does it have an infinite canvas?
no, AFAIK it doesn't have one. But then again, A4 isn't infinite either :).
Agree on all accounts, but numbers 1 & 2 are not so much disadvantages as they are natural characteristics of the process — not being able to undo shifts the way you work.
It definitely does, but I do work faster when I have the ability to undo.
Does working on pen & paper improve your workflow? how so?
I like working on pen & paper specially when I'm pairing with someone. Using an A3 (or a notebook) while you doodle lets you see not only the ideas that were selected, but also the scrapped ones — and the decisions made along the way.
It's also a great way to flesh out concept and copy for a design: just dump every word and phrase that comes to mind until solid copy starts to form. Having a thesaurus with you makes for a killer combo.
In the end it's more personal choice and your environment (i.e. working locally makes it much more viable) than anything else, though. But I do have an iPad and never really got into sketching with it.
cool, thanks for sharing your process :)
We made a lil' parody video based on Paper - https://vimeo.com/127749826
The Paper app seems awesome--but remember, there are alternatives ;)
This is going to make wireframing a much more enjoyable process.
Totally agree about the canvas, is so necessary more space, but i dont know if the infinite canvas is the correct solution. I imagine something like google map presentation, where the canvas is recreated just when is need.
The new set tools are impressive consistent and will be really useful. Yet I still hate the zoom :/ beautiful but unproductive. By far, I prefer the tradicional zoom behavior.
And although the new tools it has taken a long development time for Paper Team, i think than adobe also is doing a great work with Adobe Comp CC! https://www.adobe.com/products/comp.html
I like http://www.adonit.net/forge/ way more than the Paper app. The ability to make moodboards and projects, is really cool
Just got this update and this makes the application a lot more versatile. I've tried to do these types of block diagrams before on the tablet and it's just not the same. These new features make it a lot easier to organize components and layout logical flows.
Now all I need are some Watch, iPhone and iPad wireframe custom page templates that I can load.
Until it starts supporting other styluses out there, not just Pencil, Paper is no go for me.
This is really nice for people like me who really can't draw. I mean, I can't even draw a straight line!
