We are putting together a really strong team at JP Morgan. We are hiring Interaction Designers as well if anyone is interested.

How do you feel about Capital One acquiring adaptive path or BBVA acquiring Simple from the design perspective?

    Bloomberg immediately comes to mind.

Edit:IBM's design department has been doing some cool stuff recently and should be on the list.

The main IBM Design studio is in Austin, Texas but I would probably stay away from it... Without going into to much detail.

      +1 for Bloomberg

These aren't in-house but still a good resource for getting the lay of the land for most of the better known design studios in NY:

Also, you can assume most of the best NYC based advertising/interactive agencies have solid design teams.

I am building a strong multidisciplinary team at Audible. We are hiring Sr. UX Designers and Sr. VX Designers actively. If anyone is interested in talking to me more seriously email me at jpfields@audible.com.

If you included greater NYC, I'd suggest Fidelity Investments. I'd also second Bloomberg and include Facebook.

Well we were in NYC..then moved to Buenos Aires where our overhead dropped 3x. Now our rates are more affordable ;-) http://Design2Dev.com/services

Is there a good reason why they shouldn't be called design studios? Not just what it implies to you personally — but a real issue of definition?

Some places have studios..some dont. I have always worked on design teams that have their own studios within the agency, so for me it's definitely a flexible term.
