This seems cool. Anybody here using Tumult? Enjoying it? What is it best at? Good for prototyping?
Yep. I’ve used Hype a fair bit, mostly for quick animation prototypes. Hype is a really well built app that delivers exactly what the product page promises.
Hype 3 looks great.
I used it quite a bit for some work prototypes, and personal projects. I'll be posting a review, and tutorial up soon (showing my workflow).
I'm a big fan of Hype, and was an early tester in the Beta. I'd pick it over a lot of the current popular alternatives (Framer, Quartz, Pixate, etc.) because it blends the freedom of AE (an actual timeline) with the capability to produce a working prototype where you can actually display live data, and prototype interactions with it. You can even send a mobile design to the Tumult companion app Reflect (not yet updated for v3 though, but Frameless works as well). They have a lot of useful updates planned that I'm excited about, as they will greatly improve the overall workflow.
We did get carried away with 3+Pro, but are planning to update Hype Reflect with some newer features soon!
I use it quite a bit to make interactive prototypes that include custom animations or to do motion studies. Ive been on the Hype 3 beta for a while and am liking the symbol stuff quite a bit. The responsive site feature is neat too. Prototyping gestures isn't too great, so when gestural interactions get heavy I go back to Pixate.
Ill add that I like this better than AE bc I can make things interactive.
Can you elaborate on what improvements you'd like to see to Hype's gesture support? Always interested to figure out how we can improve here. Thanks!
A very well done app that will make you wonder whether you should use this or Framer for your next interaction/animation experiment.

Since there seems to be a lot of interest in Hype for prototyping, here's a couple blog posts we (at Tumult) have written to show off various workflows:
These were done with the previous version of Hype without any of the Pro features. Responsive Layouts, Symbols, and Physics were really built with prototyping in mind and should make prototyping even more fun!
Hype is great. The guys are very supportive with your requests and it's a very well made app. I've been beta testing Hype Pro for ages and I've been constantly surprised how powerful it is for prototyping.
A really great alternative to Adobe After Effects for nailing animations and I've successfully used it with with InVision/Marvel to make flows with animated transitions. Hype Pro's GIF export is fantastic.
Given how heavily I use InVision, this is super interesting. I'd love to see a writeup and/or example of this in action.
Bringing real animations to web apps (not native mobile, like Pixate) – and being able to demo it in InVision – sounds killer.
Great app for quick prototyping as well as for animation and interactivity stuff. Have been beta testing it for a while and can say it's very easy and powerfull
My favorite Hype feature (pre v.3 even) is how easy it is to export a GIF or MP4. It's wonderful for micro-interactions.
Question, everyone talk about proto, but what about production code?
Actually we designed Hype to be used for production content! It just so happens that a tool designed for production animations and prototyping that is easy/quick (imho) to use is also going to be great for prototyping.
The output of Hype isn't code you'll want to edit as it is mostly json and js runtime, but this lets us do all the heavy lifting of website compatibility (IE6!) and allowing for features not in HTML/CSS like motion paths or physics.

Since you're saying Hype has been designed for production content, can you tell us more about optimization ? How much does it cost in term of kilobytes to include a Hype project ?
We've spent a great deal of engineering to keep the file size small (ads specifically have this requirement).
A minimal document is only 3 network connections (.html, data/loader, runtime) and 24 KB when gzipped compressed. If your document uses physics or is being displayed on IE6-9, it automatically uses a larger runtime which is +16 KB (40 KB total).
We also do some other items as niceties; like for images we can (optionally) scale them down to the maximum size used in the animations of a document to save loading times if you bring in large assets. You can also control preloading - sometimes it is important to have images and audio ahead of time, but other times this will slow down initial loads so we give you the option!
Great answer Jonathan...I actually was interested in this as well...I noticed on the site a video for responsive layouts....i guess my question would be: a) I have to create basic html/css/jq templates for my office....simple repsonsive web page templates etc.... is this something i could use to build these?
b) is the code something I could pass off to our development team?
But if the actual output format is less important, then you could use Hype to build these - Hype Pro has a new templates feature which can be a good starting point.
