Ask DN: Tech Scene in Vancouver?

almost 7 years ago from , UI Developer

I'm visiting Vancouver (to potentially move) next month, and am super interested in the tech scene there. Are there any events/meet-ups/companies that I should know about?

Thanks DN!!

    Hey David,

I moved to Vancouver from Calgary/SF in September. I can safely say that it is one of the best cities to live in the world.

As for the tech scene, it's obviously not as good as the valley/Waterloo/Toronto but it's up and coming. There are some really interesting startups starting to push the boundaries here, particularly in gaming.

As for events, there is the Product Hunt meetup (http://www.meetup.com/Product-Hunt-Vancouver/), Traction Conf (http://www.tractionconf.io/) and Cascadia Summit(http://www.cascadiasummit.com/). Those should get you going.

Feel free to reach out when you're here. Would love to grab a coffee and talk about Van( Twitter: @markhazlett)

    Best of luck!

    Slack's main office is here.

It's a great city to work in, especially for developers.

You're in for a treat. My favourites in Victoria and Vancouver: Mediacore, MetaLab, Pixel Union, Clio (Goclio), Stocksy, KanoApps.

    Welcome David,

    Start at Pixelcrafters: http://www.pixelcrafters.ca

Then you can start following the links to the Meetup groups, Slack group, PolyglotConf, etc.

Introduce yourself using the Welcome Wagon: http://www.pixelcrafters.ca/welcomewagon

From there, we can point you at other groups and people that you would be specifically interested in.

Hey, Matt from Unbounce. Vancouver has an awesome tech community. meetup.com has a ton of meet up listings. We also host an Open House on the last friday of every month. Come by, have a beer and meet other Vancouver tech people.

It's really a great place to live. Depending where you're coming from, you may find it expensive. But since you're in tech I don't think you'll have problems with the cost of living.

The tech industry is booming here (as it is everywhere in the western world). If you are a skilled developer, you wont have troubles finding a job.

Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver... the pacific north west. There are big meetups and conferences in all three cities and since they're really close, it's worth participating in all of them.

Vancouver has a great conference called "Unconference". I've been twice and really enjoyed it: http://www.polyglotconf.com/
