Offer DN: I’ll build you Android UI prototypes for free this and next week

6 years ago from , Founder at jimu Labs

From tomorrow through March 6, I’ll spend 4 hours per day converting your app UI mockups (PSD, Sketch, Pixate, Framer.js etc.) to full-fidelity, native and interactive prototypes (some examples here: http://jimulabs.com/services/). I’ll send you all the layouts, resources and code that you can reuse for further development. No matter if it’s a Material redesign, iOS-to-Android ports or a completely new design. No strings attached. You or your company own all the rights for the work. I might ask you for the permission to publish a video of your interfaces but feel free to deny if you want to keep it confidential. We can sign an NDA if you prefer.

Why am I doing this? I’m building a tool to make it easy to create full-fidelity, development-reusable UI prototypes of native Android apps. I think building interfaces for real apps is not only an effective means of field testing, but also a great way to connect with potential users. Besides, I’d be more than happy to take over the rest of the development of the app on a contract if you like my work (I’ve been building Android apps since 2007). Critiques and comments welcomed!

To ensure that I have enough time to finish something useful for you, I’ll put a limit on the number of clients. But I’d love to chat with you and I might consider future offerings if this works well.

Shoot me an email at linton AT jimulabs DOT com! Upvote this and I’d really appreciate it. :) Thanks!

PS: If you are in Victoria/Vancouver Canada, or Seattle or SF Bay area, it’d be great to meet up and have a coffee. I’m based in Victoria and planning to make a trip to Seattle/SF in the next month or two. It’d be great to meet fellow entrepreneurs, designers and developers to exchange ideas and share stories. Ping me!

In my opinion doing this for free is not the best idea, but again is just my opinion.

This is cool! But why Android? Nobody design first for Android.

Well if you're a company you may want an Android app first right?

That would be a really weird company.

If you take India / China for instance, there is a majority of Android users. Designing Android first makes more sense. If you follow the so called "protocol" of going IOS first and then porting it to Android. You are giving a mediocre solution to a vast majority and also communicating in parallel the message - "IF you had an iphone your experience would be so much better." Now thats weird.

Because Android deserves good design too. :)

It probably doesn't matter much which platform to design for first. But as long as you want to achieve great user experience on Android, you'd want to treat it as a different, equal platform with its own unique guidelines, conventions and behaviours. The strategy of designing for iOS and then porting it to Android will only result in subpar apps.

Right. Curious to know how you think Google Inbox app for iOS fits in this elaboration.

I don't use Inbox, but are you saying the iOS app is too Android-ish? Or did I misunderstand anything?

Someday I will be like you Linton. Even I strongly believe that Android deserves good design. Its just that the Apple ecosystem is so tight it makes it easy for (forces) designers to only think in the direction of IOS apps.

Some of them are even convinced that's the only right way to go.
