Is Svbtle Dead?

8 years ago from , Writer at The Long View

Svbtle, the blogging platform, made a pretty big splash when it was released; however it seems like it's been neglected for a while now, eclipsed by Medium etc. Factors that fuel my observation:

  • No new features , improvements.
  • People who used to write a lot on the platform, don't anymore.
  • "Featured" front-page removed--no more community.
  • No email communication. Limited activity on Twitter account.

Curious to hear what others think, especially people on the platform. Just unsure why it costs $6/mo now, when it seems abandoned. Medium provides all the same benefits, and more, for free. Long time lover of Svbtle here, but considering moving on :(.

I just find that more people use Medium, so I move to Medium.

Didn't Svbtle die years ago? DC's idea of hyper exclusive bit the whole platform in the ass and then medium and/or ghost swooped in and the value add was gone. Now with a self hosted plan of 6/month, he is trying to monetize it but with the massive presence that medium has... I tip my hat and say good luck.

I made the switch to Medium. This reminds me, I need to write more.

Oh wow they tweeted today! Maybe a sign of life--perhaps the promises might one day come true. Though based on the comments here, it seems well out to pasture :(

For me, it used to be that whenever I saw a Svbtle link, I knew that the content would be of decent quality because of it being invite only, unlike Medium. But since they opened it up for everyone, the exclusiveness doesn't mean much anymore, and you can easily start a Medium blog instead for free. But that's just my opinion.

I'm using it for my blog and I still really like it. I know they implemented a paid version but I've been using it before that was implemented.

I like to use it just for writing, it's pretty comfortable to me. That said, I never published anything with it.

Hard to say if it's dead - but the user-generated-content model is certainly dying with the proliferation of D.I.Y blogs. See:

People these days put their best posts on their own blog. Then they put their mediocre to a few good ones to sites like medium and svbtle to get some traction to their personal site

I still use it, although I run a somewhat private blog. However, I love it's simplicity, no other platform out there looks that clean and neat.

I am not paying any money for it, though.

I'm running a somewhat similar non-free platform on the side that caters to the minimalist crowd http://www.postagon.com — Might consider Medium's higher goal and funding in your pricing comparison.
