You spoke, we listened.
Today, we're rolling out a new search functionality in beta. It's powered by our friends over at Swiftype. We'll be doing some style tweaks and ranking cleanups over the next week, and then rotating this in as the official search.
If you have any suggestions on result rankings or otherwise, don't hesitate to reach out via email or leave a comment in this thread.
Much better search results! Readability could be better though :)
Well done guys!
Great upgrade, some suggestions:
- Style tweaks to improve readability and have something more like the "Recent stories" page
- 10 results per page instead of 20 due to the first suggestion
- Go back to the top when clicking on next
Thank you for improving Designer News!
I would agree with these, although would prefer 20 results rather than 10 even with better readability tweaks (larger titles).
Why is the title repeated in the first line?
Less vertical space around the search field so it’s less scrolling to see the results.
Would suggest a grid for the info underneath, like put the x months ago on the far right, put the votes on the right too underneath that, keep the submitter’s name normal size but put their role in a smaller font. This will make it easier for flicking your eyes down the results as everything will be in a consistent spot.
A way to change the sorting: by votes, by title, by author.
The results are kinda weird. Search "color" and the first results are users with "color" in the company title.
We purposely weight titles a bit more. Try more specific search terms.
If I had to guess, most of the time people will be search for a story, no? Usually when I use the search here I'm like "what was that sass color thing I saw on DN?" and then come here and type in "color". Haha.
If anything, I'd give a way to search stories and to search users.
Would be really great if it was possible to sort the search results. So being able to rank between: "Best Match", "Recent" and "Most Popular" would be more than helpful. Actually pretty much like the sorting opportunities in a post.
