Ask DN: Pixels to Points for iOS

over 4 years ago from , Designer

Hey guys, an ios developer working on something I designed is asking me to convert my font sizes from PX to PT for this iPhone app project I worked on. I designed in sketch at 2x resolution, but I'm not sure how to convert to point sizes for xcode. Anyone have some guidance?

1 point equals 1 pixel on a non-retina screen. 1 point equals 2 pixels on a retina screen. 1 point rquals 3 pixels on a iPhone 6+ screen (but is scaled down a bit)

So if you design in 2x, you just divide the pixel value by 2 :)

The answer that i got that made sense was that it was font px size * 72 (ppi) / 326 (screen resolution)

The Point measurement in iOS originates from the first iPhone. 1 point was 1 pixel. Since a retina screen is exactly double the pixel density of the original iPhone, there will be 2px for each point.

Its not as complicated as the calculation you found.
