Not an empty state, but I like Secret's use of random avatars. I also like just using initials with a different background color ala gmail.

I don't think it's technically an empty state, because I don't think you can upload your own, but oh man, Netflix's avatars are my least favorite. They stress me out. The default one—that horrid dull turquoise with the screwy grin—I can't handle it. Like it bothers me on some ancestral level, as if man's first predator rose joyously from the deep sea with an asymmetrical face.
