I've been previewing icons by deploying them as precomposed web clip icons.

So the workflow is this: - Create an HTML page with the appropriate tags to the icons - Host it all on Dropbox - Use Add to Home Screen - Tap an icon from the home screen to refresh the icon file - Add to home screen again if you want to add another iteration

    I think you're talking about Ikonica: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ikonica/id638324218?mt=8

I've been using this lately. Super useful. Also makes it really easy to get other people to test icon designs on their phones.

Question: Why would you want a specific tool for previewing icons?

I always have the iOS mask rounded rectangle as a top level layer, which helps see how it’ll be cropped. If you want to see the icon in situ, you could also take a screenshot and insert it that way.

I always just create them with the correct corner rounding... But I still want to preview on device quickly. Ikonica is a great tool for that and makes previewing on multiple devices a quick process. You can also change your background on the fly so that you can see how backgrounds effect its legibility.

Oh yeah, I definitely preview on device. That part is absolutely essential (which is why we created Skala Preview). I’m just wondering about the benefits of having something that’s tailored to icon previewing. We had it on the 1.0 to-do list, but avoided it because we can’t include the iOS home screen in our app without breaking copyright. And ultimately, I think it’s a job that’s better handled by an image editor/design app, where the context can be anything at all, rather than preset backgrounds.
