Stuff like this should be paid attention to, if only because it will have some sort of impact on what we do. I'd argue on the scale and magnitude of a Squarespace (once it's come to fruition, not the first version). It'd be shortsighted to assume this is a passing novelty. It's worth trying to understand how it works so you can either make use of it or know how to sell your own work around its shortcomings.

    Doesn't bother me.

Regardless of how they spin it; it's a template.

There are clients who will want it.

    There are client who wont.

I know which clients I'd rather work for/with.

I think they will go well based due to their marketing. $600k from customers! Impressive stuff.

The AI stuff is nowhere near actually AI. What this is is well designed templates that have flexibility. Instead of a template being designed for this one 'ideal' use case they can make three or more designs for an element and have it change based on the content. So it's really just an advanced template.

I don't think the customisation aspect will be that much of a deal breaker. It may even be pretty customisable. Facebook pages and Twitter profiles are plenty useful for people even though all you can change is the images and text. As long as the final product does its job with the content people want to display and it looks nice it will do well.

I always remember people that Internet is huge. But huge a lot. The Grid will be like the ocean part of a homeopathic pill, very small. This kinds of products I've seen it since ages, they all die eventually and they will never replace custom design or custom programming.

Blogs tried in the past, we still build websites, figure this :).

Hi, xEpan does not use AI for the designing process. Rather its more towards business intelligence and content selection based on its Fuzzy Logic based learning.

Surely, documentation is required but planning is to release documentation with next major release of xEpan that is not only CMS but alos has strong ERP, DMM and CRM inbuilt.

Just to play with :: It has AI Blocks that you can use as drag and drop. You can define various dimensions at backend like your visitors are programmers of designers, businessman or enduser etc etc.

Then you design content as per this in the block. Block can be nested and system can rearrange purly nested blocks order and can select content based on its learning.

Define goals. and let system learn. It makes system choose the perfect content for better goal rate. You can finetune its DATA=>Information conversion in backend that what factors you should consider.

Apart from it, xEpan might have NLP based command system in either next or next to next release...

Its a new system, surly immature but promissing... next tentative release in March 2015.

You just explained in a myriad of ways why people don't want The Grid, then concluded by saying people already donated over $600k to The Grid.

    Something doesn't add up...

Love this – haven't tested it though.

As a designer, this tool could prove invaluable as a solution for clients. Websites are commodities, we already have a sizable template market, and this is just an iteration on that. Many clients will feel well served and others wil require more, which pushes all of us above the threshold of clients that already undervalue relatively mindless projects. This seems like a win-win to me.

Can someone explain to me how AI websites work?

I too am skeptical of the thing. The part about A/B testing is spot on. If someone has a blog, how does The Grid know then end goal that is trying to be achieved?

On the other hand software is eating into the web design market is a very real. WYSIWIG tools are continually getting better—look at Squarespace.

When it's unveiled, what will The Grid actually be? My money is a plugin to keep people's heads from getting cut of on full-width images.

I've tested today a CMS called xEpan which the developer claims to use AI in assisting the website building process. Didn't actually get how that happened though.

Is their website also built with assistance from this... "AI" you talk about?
