Truly awesome write-up. Going to make this required reading for everyone on any product design team I ever work with.

Just published an case study outlining some of the processes we went through designing and building SoundCloud's new iPhone application.

    Thanks for sharing, Michael.

Why did you guys ditch the ability to view track info in the new version? I understand the focus on the key tasks but this seems pretty core to the experience. As a consumer, I now have to go to web to do things like looking up track lists for mixes. As a creator, the info section is critical to driving engagement with a artist's fan base.

It's a good question. I'm not going to say too much about the roadmaps for the team given that I'm not at SC anymore, but it was always a much longer term vision for the app. We had a bunch of really good solutions for track info, but it was just in terms engineering priority we had to cut it for launch.

There is already a really nice approach for integrating Track Info into the player in place, it's just about building it. So wait for great things to come!

The UI for flicking through tracks and scrubbing is great, what isn't great is listening to the music I currently follow. Navigating to a certain user profile requires me to search for them, instead of accessing them from my own following list. Also when I get there I'm unable to purely listen to their feed, I have their playlists and a feed including their reposts.

Seems to be great for finding and listening to variety, but getting to something specific is kinda difficult.

Thanks for the comments! Without saying too much (given that I don't have an overview of future planned updates) access through Following-lists through the "More" menu on You was something that was originally planned, it was just all about time for launch. So hopefully this will be included with a future update.

Great work Michael. Had me re-thinking the depth of information I'm putting into my portfolio case studies. You really went deep!

Thanks a lot Al. Yeah definitely wanted to give a bit more insight into a process we as designers usually share very little of.

After using both the old and the new app, I have to congratulate you and your team for figuring out a way to scrub through a track that doesn't make me want to blow my brains out.

Thank you so much. I really love the app.

This is a great read. I'm not an interface designer (but it's on my periphery) and I will forward to some colleagues who are more geared for this type of work.

Thanks Josh, really appreciate the kind words. Yeah, we obsessed over that Player, by far the most difficult thing I've ever worked with as a designer and without us taking a leap into understanding some of the intricacies of gestures and native development it would have never happened. But I'm really happy with the result.

Really great to hear that non interface designers can get something out of it too. Thanks, appreciate the sharing / forwarding.
