Ask DN: How will you research for a new project?

almost 9 years ago from , Designer @ SAP

I wanna seek help from fellow designers regarding research for project.

So let's say, you are assigned to think about a whole new product. There's not really any clear guideline at this stage. Let's say this product will be relating to some of the hot topics(like "healthcare" or "big data")

How do you research? What's the process?

Thanks so much for the help in advance!

    1) Start with a list of specific research questions

    2) then determine the methods (survey, interview, etc) and types of questions that will inform your research questions

    3) Formulate your hypotheses related to those (survey, interview, etc) questions - this attaches a sense of measurement

    4) and once you have the data, try to prove/disapprove your hypotheses for each (survey, interview, etc) question

Great question. Whatever your process, try to keep users at the center (vs competitors, current industry methods, business approaches, engineering patterns etc).

Also on DN frontpage right now: http://researchers.io/

Would recommend you to check out the methods here: http://www.designkit.org/methods

Most of them are used by big agencies as well as companies as Spotify etc. The "Inspiration" ones are most relevant for you know.

And remember this: Don't give up if you fail. It takes time to get good at using these methods as well as research in general.

Let me know if you want some help choosing!
