On a more serious note, it seems to me that this is Apple's biggest flaw — its inability to admit defeat and start from scratch when necessary.
Probably a byproduct of their extremely high standards, they go such a long way to make perfect products that end up believing the very magic they try to sell, making it impossible to do the necessary course correction.
Funny thing is, that's exactly what Steve Jobs did when he came back to Apple and slashed most of their product line. I guess some lessons can be unlearned.
Interesting point. What if maybe they juat dont know or have time and attention to do it better? Theyre better off keeping this then improving it.
Err. Keeping this instead of tradhing it and having nothing. Cant seem to edit in tgis mobile app.
Yes, thinking about it in the last couple of days, I'm not sure killing Newsstand would be the best option. Nobody likes when Google kills their favorite service, after all.
The way Apple prizes their secrecy, we'll probably never know why these happen, but I guess it's both a lack of time/output and too much perfectionism in certain areas (e.g. iOS releases, Hardware), that ends up hurting their non-favorites (e.g. Newsstand, Game Center).
However, I'm not even sure this is a solvable issue — even though Apple is a huge company by now, you can't solve every possible problem by throwing more engineers at it.
exactly, instead of throwing more engineers at a problem they know they can't fix that way, they keep a less then perfect solution until they come up with something better. Knowing how backwards the magazine industry is also means that either they're trying to ink a good deal that will help, or this is a stopgap until they disappear.
that said i've used newstand and didn't mind it, the problems i had was how shitty the magazines where, not just their app, but lack of interesting content delivered on a very slow cycle.
“Apple should just admit that they don’t give a shit about digital magazines and be done with it.”
Or, you know, about multiplayer gaming GameCenter
