Ask DN: What apps/readers/websites do you use to keep up with news?

9 years ago from , ✍ ◐ < ◑ ☞

Besides, reading DN every day ;) what do you use to keep up with the constant stream of the internet? RSS Readers? Flipboard? Feedly? Paper?

Who does the best job of making news pleasant to read?

RSS Feeds aggregated through my feedly.com account and read through my Reeder app (http://reederapp.com) on desktop, iPad & iPhone. Reeder is great.

How do you cope with information overload? I used Google Reader and then Feedly, but kind of just stopped using RSS feeds. That ticking number killed me. Are you meticulous about combing through and only killer feeds?

If I don't check Reeder every day the feeds do pile up, but I guess I've trained myself to be good at scanning headlines.

The user interface on Reeder also makes it easy to flip through news quickly. Every now and then I'll unsubscribe from feeds I don't get value from.

I've also heard from people who abandoned RSS and just use Twitter for news.

There's lots of options out there.

Man, I still can't get used to using Twitter for news. I feel like I'm trying to grab a constantly moving target. :-P

With RSS I get a satisfying feeling when I click the "mark all as read" button.

Honestly NPR One has been a go to for news via audio. btw The branding package/bumper that plays when you open the app is well done and a fantastic example of audio branding.

I've used that and really do like it. 1 story at a time, learns your interests, doesn't feel like an endless stream.

Anything that feels the same way for reading the news?

NPR One has been my go to for ambient news when I'm working or eating by myself.

    Here's my usual workday routine:

Morning -> Go through Zite during breakfast.

Work -> Go through RSS using Feedly.

Afternoon -> Go through Designer News, Hacker News, Product Hunt, etc.

    Night -> Flipboard + Pocket/Instapaper

Weekends -> Slower/less news so I try to go through my read it later list.

Throughout the day, I'll be saving things I want to read to Pocket/Instapaper. I'm also on Twitter all day.

P.S. - I do realize that's a lot of things to go through but it's spread throughout the whole day so it doesn't feel like a lot.

might be oldschool, but I use Netvibes for all the stuff I don't mind not having live (art, illustration, ressources, skate, etc.) and stuff from people who doesn't post too much and that I might miss on twitter. For "hot" stuff, it's twitter with pocket and reading it on the subway. And designer news all the time (no kidding)

    It's working pretty well...

Feedly on Mobile is just a perfect fit. Before Feedly, I preferred Rockmelt, which is now not available after Yahoo! acquired it.

    Feedly –> Pocket

Works great for me. I plow through ~250 articles a day and save the ones I want to read to my Pocket account.

I also subscribe to some curated newsletters.
