Ask DN: Compressing multiframe GIF files

7 years ago from , Art Director at SapientRazorfish

Does anybody know a tool for compressing multiframe GIFs? Something like tinyPNG, just for GIFs.

Already found and working good: https://github.com/pornel/giflossy/releases Unfortunately I cannot batch-compress a whole bunch of GIFs.

I don't need to compress movie-loops but simple multiframe banners that need to be <40 KB.

Cheers!

Unfortunately I cannot batch-compress a whole bunch of GIFs.

gifscle is a commandline tool, ie

    ./gifsicle -O3 --lossy=80 -o lossy-compressed.gif input.gif

so you can create a loop to optimize all files in once. For example,

    cd path/to/your/gifs for file in *.gif do # do something on "$file" ./gifsicle -O3 --lossy=80 -o "compressed-${file}" "$file" done

and you will have optimized gifs in a directory.

Imagemagick has several options to help optimize animations. Check out this page on animation optimization.
