Hello designers. Let's work in public.

over 4 years ago from , Founder at LayerVault

Last week I worked on Designer News publicly (http://bit.ly/11HJVOT). It was super fun to show off the process and let people subscribe to the project. It currently has 100+ watchers that'll be receiving an email delivery soon.

I'd love to do something similar tomorrow, but with others working publicly. So here's the plan —

If you have something you'd like to open up, I'm going give you that ability. Friday I'll post a list of the public projects so that we can all watch.

This includes people with and without LayerVault accounts. Don't worry if you're not currently a customer, we'll create a special kind of "free" account for you.

So, if you want to participate, email news@layervault.com and say that you want beta access. If you don't have a LayerVault account, tell us what kind of project you'll be working on tomorrow.

Also: This public stuff is in double super beta, so beware. Calling it beta is an overstatement — it's really early stuff. So are these "free" accounts.

Such a brilliant idea, it's kinda of taking dribbble to the next level.

The new titlebar looks lovely. The use of negative space gives it a really clean look.

The typography feels a little uncomfortable though. The enormous, geometric headings paired with small, serif body text feels unbalanced to me. I rather like the current site’s single typeface, with its pleasing type ramp.

Also I’m not a fan of webfonts for the sake of webfonts. If you’ve a design goal in mind that requires them then fine, otherwise stick with native fonts. As a user I care about fast pages and good readability much more than I care about type pedigree. Having said that please keep Helvetica Neue ahead of Arial in your stack ;-)

    Allan:

Is there anything I can do to help with Designer News? I build a copy of DN using open-source project for the learning experience… I added responsive design, rss, pagination, search.

CK — The telescope/Meteor thing won't work given the stuff we're planning on doing with DN, but there's a chance you'll be able to contribute to the design stuff soon :)

I made big changes to it. My source is different than the base. RSS, Pagination, and the biggest thing I added was search. Let me know…
