Apple Watch: Initial Thoughts and Observations (daringfireball.net)

At what point does this level of industry-wide obsession with a single company become too much?
People are making whole careers out of second-guessing Apple and writing pages after pages of prognostication and pseudo-analysis, just to try and anticipate meaningless details that they'll mostly get wrong anyway.
In essence, Apple coverage has become our crowd's equivalent of supermarket tabloids… So I guess that makes John Gruber Perez Hilton?
/rant
John Gruber has always done this. And the readers who found it thoughtful years ago still do, like myself.
Yes the obsession aspect can be tiring. But product development can often be about obsession, thinking about the details and getting them right. Of course it’s all about balance, and also how useful it is to the reader.
Tabloids are just gossip that feeds more gossip. Hopefully talking about products can feed better products and better thinking.
On your last paragraph: very, very rarely have I seen hardware products, especially from Apple, follow the positive thinking that is generated because of them. It's beating a dead horse now, but all these great new things are about... 2 years old? 3? Apple isn't very good at listening to the customers--for the most part, they tell the customers what they want, and expect the customers to follow blindly.

With Apple's market cap of $607.27B (at the moment), every little things (changes / details) count.
"Industry Analysts" specialized in a specific company is nothing new. Gruber focuses on Apple but not coming from the pure financial and pure business points of view.
I was waiting for this article. As often, Gruber gets it.
Love his posts, but WHY oh WHY does the site have to be white on grey with teeny-tiny text.
Utterly illegible for more than 5 minute chunks.
Pocket-it and read on your phone/tablet.

I agree, although zooming to 125% makes reading much easier. The site scales well as it is nice & simple.
I'm also quite curious how they'll manage their supply chain going forward given the impressive numbers of variations than the Apple Watch offers...
I think this is one of the reasons they bought Beats, they acquired very strong expertise on supply chain mgmt for products with many variations.
He's not taking into account that they can afford to subsidize the price of the device because of all the money they make through applications (and now Apple Pay). I don't think the cost of these devices will be nearly as high as he suggests.
Not everyone can afford an iPhone, not by a long shot, but everyone who can knows they’re getting the best phone in the world.
So, objectively, iPhones are the best phones in the world. As John Gruber said it is as it shall be.
He later clarifies:
Apple only enters markets where they can be a market leader in quality. They unabashedly claim to make the world’s best computers (portable and desktop), the best phones, the best tablets, and the best MP3 players. The best. Of course not everyone agrees with that. But many of us do, and even those who prefer, say, Lenovo laptops or Google’s Nexus phones and tablets, would agree, if they’re at all reasonable or have any sense of taste, that Apple’s products are in the running for “best”.
Thanks. Gruber has made some pretty blanket statements in the past without clarification, so I just closed the tab when I saw that. Glad to know he wasn't being so presumptuous this time.
