Ask DN: How long do you take to design a webpage?

almost 7 years ago from , Freelance Designer/Developer

This is completely for research purposes.

How long does it take you to design a homepage (for example)? All research and UX has been taken care of - you're just given a wireframe and told to go wild.

Thanks in advance :)

Well, usually at work, it takes me between 5-8 hours. Considering that usually the client requests a lot of changes before signing off the Homepage, I could say it takes like 16 hours to get to the final result, depending of course on the brand and complexity.

8 hours for me typically if everything has been done.

A lot of things are variables in this. Using a framework probably speeds things up to like 5 hours (assuming its just grid layout and basic stuff + custom styles). Maybe 8 hours if its a little more custom. And Maybe 16 hours for full custom mark up/css/js/php (if necessary).

If you're asking for personal research/justification, and you don't currently have a gauge on how long it takes you, I'd say use a time tracker on each project. You'll get a good gauge on how long it takes you to do stuff over time.

I think it just depends on the complexity and depth of the website. If it's single page..and relatively simple than sure, a full day to flush out a design or two.

If it has multiple pages and multiple needs you could spend weeks designing. Especially considering client feedback and meetings.

EDIT: I see I am getting lots of people visit my invis.io link. Don't just drop by and leave - I am ravenous about feedback; let me know what you think so I can improve! :)

I am just getting into design. My first real go at a proper website will go live soon. A live demo is at http://www.waynehaworth.com/cf/index.html. The homepage took about 8 hours or so but that was including coming up with the layout etc.

Another design I am working on took me a couple of days. You can see it here http://invis.io/5MS3FYBF

As an aside, I find it better just to skip official wire framing and do a rough mockup in Sketch. As I only do pretty simple sites (so far!) this seems to work well.
