Do you want to stay tunned on the latest design trends? Just listed to this podcasts. Here is a list of some very important podcasts I use to listen and you should do the same.
With the exception of 99% Invisible I think all of these podcasts are too long. Part of what is great about podcasts is that they don't have to fit the constraints of a radio schedule. I think an episode should only be as long as it needs to be. Whenever I see podcasts that all weigh in at around an hour I just assume there is a ton of filler and a lack of editing.
Shows like This American Life, Radiolab, and The Ted Radio Hour, craft hour-long shows that are interesting throughout but, even those are broken into segments and smaller chunks.
TL;DR _ Ain't nobody got time for a bunch of hour long amateur talk-shows.
I absolutely LOVE 99% Invisible. Such an amazing, well produced, thoughtful podcast. I definitely see your point about longer podcasts. However, they serve a different purpose for me — I love listening to longer podcasts as I work. The recent ~8 hour Debug three part marathon with Nitin Ganatra was amazing, with tons of inside info about the development of OS X and the iPhone. When there’s an interview with someone like that, I’d rather it wasn’t a tightly polished 20 minute interview.
I think both formats can work well, and I’m glad 1+ hour long podcasts exist.
I think you're right. The core of my point is they should only be as long as they need to be. Memory Palace has had 6-minute episodes that had a big emotional impact and I know that This American Life routinely tackles subjects that barely fit into an hour and could easily justify a longer episode here or there if they weren't on the actual radio.
I think you hit the nail on the head. The vast majority of design podcasts are talk shows. This can work great if the people talking are interesting and have good chemistry (I'm looking at you, Shoptalk Show), but most of the time it falls flat.
I wish there were more specialized design podcasts, like podcasts about design news, design critique, etc. instead of the hosts just rambling for 60 minutes each week…
I've been listening to Iterate for a while now.
Marc Edwards ftw
Yeah! Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet.
Love these guys. They always ask the most interesting and thought provoking questions. Definitely makes my morning drive much more enjoyable.
They always ask the most interesting and thought provoking questions.
So glad to hear you say this. We try. I’m always fearful we ask too many similar questions and that they’re softballs. It can be hard to find a balance between asking a guest something that will invoke an interesting and challenging response, without catching them off guard or making the interview uncomfortable. (I’m still pretty new to the whole interview thing.)
Thank you. :) I really appreciate it. If there’s anyone interesting you think we should speak to, please let me know (either here or on Twitter etc).
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mike Monteiro's podcast Let's Make Mistakes
Agree. I enjoy the rat-holes too.
Totally agree. I love their digressions too. :)
Yea, they know how to keep it casual and professional at the same time. I love when Mike gets heated up about something and loses his filter.

Seanwes' podcast is great. He and Ben put a lot of solid effort into the show and it really comes through in the episodes.
Regardless if you are into lettering or not there is a lot of insight on design as whole in his show.

I just got tipped about Invisible Office Hours. But have not listened to it myself.
Here is a list I've created before
I'm pretty biased to The Start FM as I am a co-host of it.
If you listen, let me know what you do or don't like. Always open to feedback.
I also really enjoyed The Industry podcast but that seems to have left the universe.
Hired.fm is another good one.
Little off topic, does anyone remember
Spreading the love of my favourite podcast: Adventures In Design - http://www.aidpodcast.com/
(arguably, not THAT much about design, but by far the most entertaining)

Jon, thanks for mentioning!
