Copying & Pasting in Sketch 3

over 5 years ago from , UX Designer @RunKeeper

Anyone have a nice work around for this bug? Maybe a plugin? I use copy and past a lot and pasting to the center of my canvas every time is rather annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you right click and select paste, it should paste content wherever your mouse is located. (as opposed to just pressing command v which defaults to pasting into the center of the canvas like you mentioned).

Hold down the option key and drag. Then it will duplicate whatever you're dragging and you can place it anywhere on the art board/canvas.

Paste In Place (Command+Shift+V) is what you're looking for. Although I do miss it being the default. Fingers crossed for reverting or adding it to Preferences!

Yeah, I was gonna say, does no one know about cmd+shift+V? I use it all the time, in every program, practically by reflex.

It takes half a second to click on "Edit" in the menu bar and notice "Paste In Place - ⇧⌘V"

I do this as well, and yes, it should be default. I can't remember a time I ever wanted to paste to center, its the strangest behavior to me.

Looks like it's just since 3.0.3 update, I remember copy/paste working pretty well before (pasting to the same emplacement between artboards)

Hope next update will fix that.

Oh damn I thought this was somehow only me that had this problem, so I've reinstalled and clean installed Sketch twice.

I reported this bug, and many others. It's incredibly frustrating, and I wonder how this can even happen, if they test their update release before publishing and have beta testers as well.

They’ll probably shelf the bug, fix it in Sketch 4 and make you pay £74.99 for the privilege.

I’m not bitter that Sketch 2 has been left a buggy mess

If I have to buy a new license everytime they release a new version, I will not be happy and definitely not worth the funds.

Major versions you will, without any kind of discount. But if version 2.0 to 3.0 is anything to go by, they’ll leave 3.0 with a heap of bugs which make it not production-ready.

But in the long run pay ~$80 is still cheaper than many other design programs.

Try to download the sketch beta. http://bohemiancoding.com/sketch/beta/

I think they have fixed this.

They have, although they told me on Twitter not to share files between the stable and beta releases. fyi.

I ditched Sketch 3 (unwillingly) because of its unpredictable pasting behaviour.

    :(

You paid $80 and then ditched the program because instead of 'cmd+v' you needed to press 'cmd+shift+v'? That can't have been the only reason, lol.

        cmd+shift+v works unpredictably for me.

even right clicking and selecting paste in place does weird things for me.

I find that zooming in on another object around the area where I want to place my copy will put the object in the center of the screen rather than of the canvas - makes it easier to place the object. It's a work-around, the original copy-paste is not ideal.

For mac OS, press option + mouse click to clone the object. It works better that copy and paste.

Sketch 3 beta solves the bugs. Enjoy: http://bohemiancoding.com/sketch/beta/

I find it annoying too. The only momentary workaround I found is replicating the x,y coordinates from the other (original) artboard (first 2 values in the inspector).

Hope they fix it, I use it a lot for copying icons in the navbar from one iOS screen to another.

What is the behaviour you would like? Where should it be pasted?

Indeed. Surely the middle makes sense if there's nothing else provided for the app to make that decision?

A lot of times Paste in Place doesn't even work and it just pastes in the center of the screen.

Just do regular paste with "Paste in Place" disabled in preferences. It always pastes in place now.

This Morning's update has this as the first bug listed in the release notes. Hope this fixes your issue.
