Escriba: Online text editor

over 7 years ago from , Web Developer

Hi peeps,

Just felt like sharing one of my side projects, as a way of forcing myself to keep improving it (if people actually use it, I will make it better for sure!).

Escriba is a Zen online text writing tool: it saves your content automatically to your browser local storage or you can save it to Dropbox.

I've tried to make the typography just right, supporting a sans-serif and monospaced fonts. There was a lot of experimentation to get it right for writing at laptop-screen distance, so tell me what you think!

Escriba: http://escriba.co

Full markdown support will be coming this week. Thoughts? Thank you!

Woah, thanks everyone for the feedback, wasn't expecting such positive feedback. Just what I needed to get this going again!

By the way forgot to say previously, this is Open Source :) you can find the source on Github: https://github.com/magalhini/escriba

Will soon give it a bit of a scrub up for sure!

Very nice! There are alot of similiar services, but most of them wants you to sign in, which I don't want to do. I'll use this, thanks!

Very nice!! I love it :D I will certainly use it in the future when I'm taking notes. And I just love the theme switcher. If it's not too much to ask for, it would be awesome if you added more themes to it, like in a drop-down list and you could choose from there.

That's a very good idea. The application is completely open source and it would be nice to have themes that people build themselves. At the moment I went for the simplicity of having a night/dark mode, but I'm missing a sepia one :) so I just might give your idea a go. Cheers!

It would be awesome if you made it more configureable, like the user inserts a json scheme where he can change the font size, font family (use google fonts) and themes (where the colour codes are inside the json document)

When I get time, I'll take a look into it and see if I can maybe add it myself as it is OS :D

This is going to replace TextPad and iA Writer when I'm taking notes for sure.

Amazing thing you got going on here.

That was the biggest compliment I could ever ask for. Ever. Thanks for taking the time to say the words! I've done some updates today, so hopefully it's even better now. But the plan is to keep it drop-dead simple, of course :)

Dropbox saving! I am a big fan already. You are awesome. I will use this daily for note taking during meetings. I have had an idea for a while that I will drop here: A markup for .text that formats the words based on how commonly they are used in the human language. Skimming would be much easier if the words 'the' and 'to' were a different color that 'meeting' and 'tuesday'. - Just a thought.

Really cool. Looks very simple but thats what a text editor should be. Keep on working.

Awesomesauce! Just one feedback. When you change to monospaced font, change the title font as well.. :)

Skimmed thru the source code. I love how there's very little dependencies on libraries.

Thanks for this, it's perfect: just the right features, nothing more. I personally don't need markdown, but I guess it won't hurt.

I love it! I've used a some similar things, but this one does exactly what I'm looking for--nothing more, and nothing less.

    Is auto-correct (mac) disabled?

At the moment yes, I found the underlines distracting... but good point, there should be an easy way to reactivate it! thanks for reminding me of this!

Thank you! And that's the plan, yes! Markdown is already implemented (you can view it when printing) but not the preview. Will try and work on it today, actually.

      Thanks again :)

Love this! Although the dropbox support has been pretty buggy for me.

This is awesome! Please consider adding RTL alignment support. [dir="rtl"] since I frequently write in Arabic.

Really good work, clean type :) Have you tried it with bigger icons in a different arrangement? It might be good as a toolbar like in adobe cc apps. Also if you want to push it the extra mile you could include an 8.5" rule for margins and such.

Very nice. I especially like the nod to Bruce Lee in the text field prompt.

One thing that was a little buggy for me was the "About" section. It disappeared as I was reading it and then I had trouble clicking it to stay open again.
