Is it just me?

over 6 years ago from , Designer

Yesterday I was browsing DN for some inspiration for a new project as well as getting my daily design fix and I came across 2 posts on the homepage that seemed out of place for this community. The posts I am referring to are:

It Looks Like Raging Hockey Fans Destroyed An LAPD Drone Last Night

Codes For the Destiny Alpha on PS4

Is it just me that does not see the value in these posts for a design community or am I missing something here?

I think DN needs downvoting, flagging, or something along those lines.

You mean like this very post being downvoted? This post had 4 upvotes but now has 3... I believe the only one that can downvote is an admin. Can someone explain to me how this gets downvoted but PS4 alpha codes gets shot straight to the top?

There are several mods in the community to have the ability to downvote posts as well.

The most awesome feature ever. I love how this special ability sometimes freak people out.

Down-voting doesn't prevent this kind of stuff.

The PS4 alpha stuff wasn't irrelevant. It was posted by the UX Design Lead at the game's developer (Bungie). Maybe a video of the in-game UX would have been more useful for everyone, especially those without a PS4. And maybe he could've done a better job leading into the codes ("Hey all, these codes let you see the design work we've been doing at Bungie if you have a PS4..."). But, regardless, still cool and useful info.

Worth noting that Destiny does have a somewhat novel and beautiful interface for a gamepad-based control scheme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KJFWIzCXnc

I usually just go "Oh, Okay. That's here. Next..." and continue on. But yeah, not really design, but more or less just mildly interesting.

The first one really has no place here. The second one seems a little irrelevant... I wonder if he could have offered a code for some feedback on the UI. Seems like that would be a fair trade.

I don't see anything wrong with the second one; they're posting cd keys because they want other DNers to play with right?
