Inspired by thenews.im by @ahmetsulek, @twnsndco & I decided to bring it over to iOS. We spent quite a bit of time agonising over how best to bring the experience to iOS.

We hope you like it & any feedback is appreciated !

Our hope is this ends up on the homescreen of your iPhone :)

Thanks to all our beta testers!

Also, I created an Objective-C Wrapper for the Designer News API, https://github.com/TosinAF/DNManager. The docs are poor atm but one look at the header file & you'll be able to use it.

Submit this to HN too; I'm sure they'd like it as well.

This is rad. The only thing I noticed that irked me is the the gestures for switching between DN and HN.

You can swipe to right right anywhere on HN to get to DN, but swiping to the left on DN shows the comments. It would be nice to be able to swipe anywhere on DN to get to HN.

Ah sorry, it's because if you had logged in, you'd be able to upvote on the left of HN, thereby leaving the only way to navigate between DN & HN is by swiping on the nav bar.

Is that still alright or an alternative would be to bunch both gestures into the left of DN & the right of HN.

Let me know what you think & thanks for the feeedback.

Echoing what Tosin said, there's the issue of the logged in user vs. no account.

One solution may be to hold the right swipe action only to the nav-bar if a user lacks an account.

Looks cool. May I ask why free?

We're within TheNews project which is also free. And we'd rather see people download it and use it. Even .99 is a barrier to entry.

Also my main aim was to get it to as many people as possible because I felt loads of people wanted this.

The best form of payment is for me to see my app make it to your homescreen.

If it isn't already, let me know what to improve, in order to fix that! :)

I see the pan gesture is overloaded. Pan on a cell triggers cell related actions, pan on bar switches between HN/DN. I don't have a solution right away but I think it's confusing. Hope this helps. Usually I provide more constructive criticism :)

It's modeled on actions that are common. This same sort of pan is used in Tweetbot, Twitter, etc., so it was something I thought users would be comfortable with.

I completely understand how you could feel that it's overloaded. It is used for 3 different actions in different directions. It can definitely feel like a lot of swiping after a while, although it does afford less constant tapping and sometimes cuts out a step. I had to make a compromise there.

This app is awesome and is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you!

Some quick feedback: - it's not immediately obvious how to get out of the MOTD quote modal without up/down voting - I get a network error when upvoting something on HN and but upvoting on DN works

      Glad you like it.

Ah I see, yeah could possibly bring up a text about how to dismiss when you first open it or a add a close button.

During development, the HN Unofficial API i'm using worked perfectly but I think HN changed somethings that broke it sadly.

Commenting for now dosen't work aswell.

Hopfully can provide a fix for it soon. Thanks for the feedback :)

Cell was listed in the search view, to be precise.

Got this, just by opening the post via a pan on a cell: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i8hnt5cd6j6g7h8/Photo%20Jun%2013%2C%209%2034%2055%20PM.png

Really nice, love having both sites in one place! Panda has filled this need nicely on desktop, so it's great to have it on iPhone too.

A couple of bug reports (4S running 7.1.1.):

    • DN Log in: After submit i'm not redirected, and don't get a confirmation. Button turns blue and that's it, I have to tap back then Skip > to get to content. I only knew I was logged in because I checked Settings.
    • Settings: App closed to home screen after 5 secs.

I like this app so far. I feel like the loading of stories could be faster, and I'd like to see recent stories too, not just top stories.

Hmm, sorry about the slow loading of stories, will investigate the cause.

If you click the menu button on the left on the DN side, you can click to see recent stories instead. The same process to go back to top stories.
