Driving live web-app design from Sketch

almost 7 years ago from , Developer

This is one of our experiments to see how far in developing front-end/client-side apps designers can go, and how to improve the workflow between developers and designers.

It's a super-early prototype, and it doesn't handle lots of things, but we thought it would be great to get more people commenting on it earlier rather than later. Is this something that if easily integrated would be useful for you?

We're note sure if it's a product, but maybe it's still useful to the community at large.

Looking forward to the feedback! http://youtu.be/8gTLwMesXrs

And oh yes, this is my first post on DN, thank you for such a nice place :)

Congrats on releasing a prototype, looks pretty cool!

    Here's a few questions:

    • How are you handling positioning? Absolute? Float based?
    • Are you planning to output accessible code?
    • Are you targeting simple brochure sites or complex sites too?
    • Do you imagine the code being handed off at some point?

Also, I assume you've seen WebFlow? They do something similar, without Sketch.

This looks great! I really hate the fact that I have to dive into code for small design issues or changes, if this is easy to implement and won't annoy our developers I'd be more than happy to use it.

Thanks Ale, both for the kind words and for all your help on the mailing list.

The code is definitely a challenge as you know, in particular the CSS rules, but we'll figure it out bit by bit.

This is some nice stuff and I hardly appreciate the effort people put in those kinds of plugins/software.

I'm not doing much front-end but personally I think that stuff like this is not really suitable for production projects. This could be really helpful for creating nice prototypes, especially for designers that can't code, but I think most of the people prefer to hand-code their projects because it gives you more control.

Anyway, good luck and I'm really curious to see where this gets to :)

I'm curious about the html layer. Is it being/planned to be hooked up based on the folder structure?

This is really cool, would love to test it if you need someone to try it out.

Hi Sean, welcome to DN. This is a very cool concept!

How does it work exactly? In the video, you say that data is coming from Sketch into the JS app, but that only modifies values for the template, it doesn't seem to add new code into the view. So is this something that goes back and forth between the designer creating in Sketch and the developer building the app, to make sure they are dealing with the same code?

Correct me if I'm way off. I'd like to hear your vision for this.

I'm always amazed at desktop software talking to the web, or native apps. How does this work under the hood (primarily sketch talking to the web to update stuff)? Can you give the simple explanation?
