Massimo Vignelli January 10, 1931 - May 27, 2014
“The life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the ugliness.”
Just came on to say the same thing. Can't find the words to describe how influential he's been on my career & probably hundreds of thousands of others. RIP.
+1 = –1
“I don't think that type should be expressive at all. I can write the word 'dog' with any typeface and it doesn't have to look like a dog. But there are people that [think that] when they write 'dog' it should bark.”
― Massimo Vignelli
Inteview with Massimo Vignelli here. Explains how he brought Helvetica in America and more.
When I briefly attended college for a graphic design course, I remember being bored and skipping class to go read books on design that interested me. That's when I came across Massimo Vignelli and his work and his ideology. It opened my eyes and gave me a new perspective on design and what it means to be a designer. Thank you, Massimo.
Can you recommend any book to begin with?
I just read The Vignelli Canon, I think it's really cool. Not too long but with a lot of good considerations.
What other books did he write? Can you suggest?
Sleep well Mr. Vignelli
Jason Santa Maria mentioned Vignelli (shortly, though) in his speech at Build 2011. Loved the whole talk, maybe someone will find it inspiring also: http://dragd.is/EExOx
I remember him saying shortly after he arrived in America one of the first cities he visited was Savannah, GA. One of the reasons he visited the city was the grid of the streets in the historic district. He was drawn to design in a way that so inspiring to me. He will live on through the designer that he has inspired.
Seriously big loss. :(
Happy to have met him at Brand New Conference in 2012. RIP.
RIP, Massimo. Our industry has lost a legend.
