PSA: You can use nested symbols in Sketch

over 7 years ago from , UX Designer

Just a heads up, as apparently not even Bohemian Coding knows about this. To do it, just add the symbol to a regular group and turn the parent group into a symbol afterwards.

It's a sketchy (heh) workaround, but it does the job :)

Dear Daniel, and all readers of this thread:

of course we know about nested symbols. After all, we programmed them : )

But please note this bit. When we say:

that feature still needs a bit more polish

we really mean it. It was enabled during early betas (which were used to make the iOS templates), and we found it to do more harm than good. So, we disabled the most obvious ways to nest symbols in the UI while we fix the underlying code, trying to save you from shooting your foot.

However, if you want to ignore the warning signals and pull the trigger, be aware that when we say "nested symbols are not yet supported" we *do* mean it. If your document turns itself into a burning ball of fire, don't be surprised if the answer from our support team is: "we told you not to do that" : )

Personally, I can't wait for the day when the feature is ready to use. But it still isn't, so I'd strongly advise you to be patient.

    Thanks for reading! : )

I meant the don't know about this figuratively, of course. No offense :)

And yes, my documents have become burning balls of fire several times already, as you probably noticed from my crash reports :P

Thanks for the warning. Guess I'll save this as a parlor trick until it's fully baked.

Ale, I love how active you and the team are with the community. Great response. Keep killing it :)

P.S. If anybody has managed to turn their document into a "burning ball of fire" please record it. That would be neat.

Thanks! It's a pleasure to be active with a community like this : )

As for the ball of fire recording: +1. That would make a great TV spot: "Design so *hot* it will literally melt your computer".

Next up groups of objects copying and pasting in the correct locations +Groups of objects being able to be aligned. Key workflow items.

      Keep rocking!

      Hey, Ale,

Do you guys have an ETA on when we'll be able to "officially" nest symbols?

      Thanks!

Awesome, thanks for the tips. I wanted to do this yesterday and couldn't figure out if it was possible.

Also, if the Create Symbol button is unavailable for some reason, it may be enabled by right-clicking the group in the left panel and selecting the same option from the dropdown.

I realized that I’ve been nesting symbols recently. Is this a safe feature now? :)

As far as I know it's not officially supported yet, and there's still no word of when it will be.

In my mind, this is the single most important missing feature right now. I've been using this workaround, but it's incredibly tedious and still very buggy.

Where should I subscribe to if I would like to know when nested symbol is supported? Thanks!
