Ask DN: How did you shift from designing for iPhone to designing for Android?

9 years ago from , Co-founder, Designers.how

I've been designing for iPhones for a year straight now, and need to start learning the ropes of Android. For what screen sizes did you start designing? Which UI libraries (like T+L's for iPhone) did you use? Any help much appreciated.

It was a pain in the ass.

I've bought a Nexus 5. I wanted to experience the original Android experience. I've been using it 100% of the time.

Then, I started to watch all the Google I/O presentations about HIG. Specially the latest ones.

Then I built a kit to start prototyping in Sketch 3: https://github.com/meerita/avuik

When I started to make the design, I had lots of talks with Android developers to understand the reach of the Android Technology, then I was able to design with stuff in mind.

As and advice: Android is not iOS. Even if you feel something is really handy in iOS it will not be Android, not on most cases.

Wow. AVUIK is awesome. Thanks for making this. I'm going to give it a try.

And this is an awesomely detailed response. Never thought to watch the I/O presentations...there's such an abundance of Android stuff out there that it's nice to have an anchor point.

      (PS: Notegraphy app is beautiful.)

You're welcome to request anything. I will see this weekend to finish up all the rest of the parts of the OS.
