Ask DN: Is there a network for young designers and developers?

over 5 years ago from , Ideas, youth, tech, design, & education

Does anyone know of a network for young (college + pre-college) designers and developers? Do you think it's a good idea to have one?

As a student, it's been hard for me to find peers who like doing the same things I do, and we know that collaborating with peers helps motivate ourselves to do better, so I would personally really love to see something like this. Would anyone be interested in helping me start something like this, especially students, if this were to be created?

I was thinking about making something like this recently, actually. I'm a freshman in college and I'd be down to help out. I have a few design friends who might be interested as well.

If you're interested, I've set up a Young Web Designers/Developers mailing list for us at youngweb@librelist.com. If you want to chat with me and (hopefully) others who sign up, just sign up yourself by sending an email to it. Once you're signed up, feel free to start a discussion! I'll respond to it for sure.

I would love to see something like this exist, even though I'm only going to be a student for a few more weeks, well that's the plan anyway. :)

Yeah something like this would be nice. I do feel DN is the best thing I've found.

But I have sometimes very beginner questions that I post to DN that I need help on, and wish I could get more feedback on.

I would also be interested in something like this. I always am on the lookout for other young web designers. I think it's helpful to be able to talk with people my own age.

I'm not sure if anyone here may remember/know of this, but when I started off back in 2004-5, TutorialForums was the leading go-to place to discuss, seek help, assist, collaborate and trade design and development.

10 years on and I, as a senior, still miss being a part of such a community. It would be amazing to have a central hub along those lines come along. DN I feel comes close in tackling quite a bit of that in the sense that we can do pretty much all of the above listed.

I am aware only of studentdesigners.com I personally don't use the site but I actually had an idea for this a long long time ago but with no means of developing the site I had no where to go with it unfortunately.

Prior to DN, the active ones I find is those based around design conferences. Its not as much just for young designers, but the bulk of it is from there because of the involvement of students. Kyoorius DesignYatra on Facebook is doing alright, predominantly from india. Its slowly grown to one that is similar to DN.

Network in real life if you can! It fuelled my passion to when I met the designer who inspired me to do design (in a design festival). Also, try your local meetup.

Maybe a mailing list would suffice? Either way, if you (or any other college/pre-college) beginning designers/developers want to talk, hit me up: tieliaco [at] gmail [dot] com

Edit: I've started a Young Web Designers/Developers mailing list at youngweb@librelist.com. Send an email to that address to subscribe and we can all start talking!
